Essentium to Go Public: 3D Printing Company SPAC Deal

Additive Manufacturing and the Rise of SPACs
The additive manufacturing sector has experienced a surge in interest from Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs). Several prominent companies, including Desktop Metal, Shapeways, Markforged, and Velo3D, have either finalized or declared intentions to become publicly listed through this method.
Essentium's Planned Public Listing
Essentium, headquartered in Austin, Texas, has recently announced its plans to join this trend. The company intends to achieve this through a reverse merger with Atlantic Coastal Acquisition Corporation.
This transaction is projected to value the merged entity at $974 million. A significant portion of this valuation, $345 million, will be provided in cash by Atlantic Coastal.
Supply Chain Disruptions as a Catalyst
Essentium attributes the increasing attention surrounding additive manufacturing and 3D printing to the current disruptions within global supply chains. These issues are driving demand for alternative manufacturing solutions.
According to CEO Blake Teipel, existing global supply chain systems are facing increasing pressures. Trade imbalances and the ongoing pandemic are contributing to significant distribution delays.
“The fundamental weaknesses in our current supply chains are being amplified by growing challenges,” Teipel stated. “This announcement signifies a crucial step in our mission to deliver lasting, viable solutions for a new manufacturing approach capable of directly addressing these worldwide issues.”
Essentium's Technology and Clients
Essentium first showcased its innovative technology in 2017. Their system employs a plasma-based process to bond 3D-printed plastic materials during printing.
This technique results in objects with enhanced strength compared to those produced using conventional Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM). Furthermore, Essentium utilizes a High Speed Extrusion process.
The company claims this process is considerably faster, achieving speeds 5 to 15 times greater than standard extrusion methods. Essentium’s current customer base includes notable organizations such as the U.S. Department of Defense, Lockheed Martin, and Ford.
Deal Timeline
The completion of this merger is anticipated in the first quarter of 2022.
