Waymo Robotaxi Causes Traffic Snarl at Chick-fil-A

A Waymo autonomous vehicle recently created a traffic obstruction at a Chick-fil-A restaurant located in Santa Monica, California. The incident occurred when the robotaxi became immobilized within the fast-food establishment's drive-through lane.

Waymo has officially acknowledged the event, initially brought to light by KTLA 5, a local news broadcaster, and subsequently confirmed to TechCrunch through email correspondence.

No Passengers Were Onboard

According to Waymo, the robotaxi was not carrying any passengers at the time of the incident. It had just completed a passenger drop-off in the Chick-fil-A parking area.

The vehicle’s inability to execute a multi-point turn was attributed to the confined space, resulting from its close proximity to the drive-through lane and the presence of several other vehicles.

Incident Resulted in Delays

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a consequence of this situation. The primary impact was inconvenience experienced by customers waiting to place their orders.

Previous Incidents with Waymo Robotaxis

This is not an isolated occurrence. Waymo robotaxis have previously been documented, often through social media videos, as causing traffic disruptions or other disturbances.

Over the past year, instances have included a Waymo vehicle becoming stuck in a continuous loop and another obstructing the path of former Vice President Kamala Harris’ motorcade in San Francisco.

A separate event involved a parking lot occupied by multiple Waymo vehicles emitting honking sounds for approximately one hour during the early morning.

Waymo's Service Areas

Waymo currently provides commercial robotaxi services in several major cities. These include San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.

Furthermore, a collaborative effort with Uber extends Waymo’s robotaxi service to Austin, Texas.
