Accel Leads $18M Series A for Knoetic - HR Software

Knoetic Secures $18 Million in Series A Funding
Knoetic, a company developing software analytics specifically for chief people officers, has officially exited stealth mode. The startup recently completed a $18 million Series A funding round.
Understanding the Role of Chief People Officers
For those unfamiliar, the role of chief people officer is often synonymous with head of human resources, or HR. These leaders are responsible for managing a company’s most valuable asset: its people.
Investment Details and Backer Support
Accel spearheaded the financing. Remarkably, the round also attracted investment from over 100 angel investors. This group included numerous executives, venture capitalists, and current and former chief people officers (CPOs).
Companies represented by these angel investors include Mozilla, Pinterest, Gusto, Box, Twilio, Fitbit, Kickstarter, Looker, Hired, and GitHub.
Founder's Perspective on Investor Confidence
Founder and CEO Joseph Quan views the substantial angel investment as significant validation. The participation of industry professionals demonstrates strong belief in Knoetic’s trajectory.
Platform Origins and the Impact of the Pandemic
Established in March 2020, Knoetic is headquartered in New York City. The company has created a platform that integrates a social network with a SaaS-based analytics tool tailored for chief people officers.
The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically altered the HR landscape. Leaders were suddenly tasked with remote hiring and virtual employee retention strategies, creating unprecedented challenges.
Founder's Background and Experience
Joseph Quan brings extensive experience in the HR technology sector. He previously held positions at Twine, a predecessor company to Knoetic.
“The genesis of our company stemmed directly from the pandemic,” Quan explained to TechCrunch. “We observed that the role of the chief people officer was thrust into the spotlight, and it was a particularly difficult and isolating time for them.”
“Everyone was seeking solutions, and we recognized the need for a network where these professionals could share experiences, address complex questions, and ultimately, lay the groundwork for a more comprehensive vision.”
A Growing Community of HR Professionals
Currently, over 1,000 HR professionals are active members of Knoetic’s social community. This community is seamlessly integrated into the company’s people analytics software.
The resulting “Insight Engine” provides CPOs with both quantitative and qualitative data. This aims to facilitate more informed and well-rounded workforce decisions.
The network operates as a referral-only forum, enabling HR professionals to discuss best practices and tackle critical issues, such as navigating the Delta variant and managing transitions to and from remote work.
Capabilities Beyond Data Analysis
Knoetic empowers chief people officers to create board presentations and effectively communicate data to CEOs. The platform also supports improvements in employee retention, compensation strategies, and recruitment processes.
Impressive Customer Base
In a relatively short period, Knoetic has attracted a notable clientele and community. Current customers include Lyft, Squarespace, Amplitude, Discord, Dollar Shave Club, and Zapier.
Addressing a Critical Need in the HR Sector
Vas Natarajan of Accel believes Knoetic is addressing a significant pain point within the industry.
“We recognize the immense pressure on people teams to consolidate information for organizational decision-making,” Natarajan stated via email. “Leading companies prioritize strong people functions supported by robust data to inform decisions regarding compensation, performance, diversity, and inclusion. Knoetic provides a unified solution for all of these needs.”
Future Plans: Product Development and Team Expansion
The newly acquired capital will be allocated to the development of new products and the expansion of the Knoetic team.
Currently employing around 25 individuals, the company anticipates growing to “over 40” employees by the end of the year.
Vision for the Future of HR Analytics
“Our goal is to establish the premier network for HR professionals and cultivate a dedicated community team,” Quan stated.
Looking ahead, Quan envisions an analytics engine that is not only insightful but also predictive. This engine would proactively identify potential turnover risks, suggest mitigation strategies, and enhance employee retention rates.
“As more users leverage the platform and contribute data, we can build models to predict company performance and identify potential challenges in the coming months,” Quan added. “We are actively developing these capabilities on the backend.”
