Mercedes-Benz Unveils the All-New EQS Sedan
After a period of anticipation marked by previews and announcements, Mercedes-Benz has fully revealed its flagship EQS sedan. TechCrunch was among the first to experience a pre-production version of this vehicle. The unveiling removes all remaining ambiguity surrounding the EQS – the all-electric equivalent of the iconic Mercedes S-Class – showcasing a sedan defined by both supreme luxury and cutting-edge technology.
Exterior Design and Technological Innovations
While the vehicle’s exterior styling is currently a focal point of discussion, it’s the advanced technology integrated within that has truly captured attention. Features include a sophisticated microsleep warning system and an expansive 56-inch hyperscreen.
Further enhancing the in-cabin experience is a high-performance HEPA air filter. The vehicle’s software is designed to proactively learn and adapt to the driver’s preferences, anticipating their needs.
Even the sensory experience has been carefully considered, with the introduction of a new fragrance, No.6 MOOD Linen. This scent is characterized by a refreshing blend of fig and linen notes.
A Holistic Approach to Luxury
According to Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz, the EQS isn’t defined by a single feature. He explained to TechCrunch that the vehicle’s success lies in the cumulative effect of numerous details. “It’s those 100 little things that make the difference and that makes a Mercedes a Mercedes,” Källenius stated.
Strategic Importance of the EQS Launch
Mercedes-Benz anticipates that the combination of advanced technology, robust performance, and elegant design will resonate with potential customers. The successful introduction of the EQS, particularly in North America, is crucial for the automaker.
This launch represents a significant opportunity for Mercedes to overcome the challenges encountered during the initial release of the EQC crossover in the United States, which has since been discontinued. The company is heavily invested in establishing a strong foothold in the electric vehicle market with the EQS.

Initially, the U.S. market will receive the EQS 450+ boasting 329 horsepower and the EQS 580 4MATIC delivering 516 horsepower.
While pricing details remain undisclosed, Mercedes-Benz has shared comprehensive information regarding the vehicle’s performance characteristics, design elements, and achievable range.
Dimensions and Aerodynamics
The EQS, designed for the U.S. market, measures just over 17 feet in length, specifically 205.4 inches. This positions it favorably in relation to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class models.
Notably, the EQS achieves a drag coefficient of 0.202. This figure surpasses both the Tesla Model S and the forthcoming Lucid Motors Air, establishing it as the most aerodynamically efficient production vehicle currently available.
Powertrain and Performance
All EQS models utilize an electric powertrain positioned at the rear axle. The EQS 580 4MATIC incorporates an additional electric powertrain at the front axle, enabling all-wheel drive functionality.
Power output ranges from 329 hp to 516 hp, contingent upon the selected variant. Furthermore, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the development of a performance-oriented version capable of generating up to 630 hp.
Both the EQS 450+ and EQS 580 4MATIC are electronically limited to a top speed of 130 mph. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 5.5 seconds in the EQS 450+ and a quicker 4.1 seconds in the EQS 580 4MATIC.
Battery and Charging
Two battery options will be offered for the EQS, though detailed specifications have currently been released for only one. The larger battery pack provides 107.8 kWh of usable energy.
Under European WLTP testing standards, this configuration allows for a range of up to 478 miles on a single charge. However, EPA estimates, typically more conservative, are expected to be somewhat lower.
The vehicle supports fast charging at stations utilizing direct current, with a maximum input of 200 kW. AC charging is also available via the on-board charger at home or at public charging locations.
Technological Advancements
Let's now turn our attention to the advanced technologies integrated within the EQS.
ADAS
The EQS incorporates a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, collectively known as ADAS. These systems rely on an array of integrated sensors, including ultrasound, cameras, radar, and lidar, to enhance safety and convenience.
Key ADAS features include adaptive cruise control with adjustable acceleration profiles, lane keeping assist capable of maintaining lane position up to 130 mph, and automated lane changing functionality. The system also provides intelligent speed limit assist, recognizing posted limits and construction zone signage.
Advanced Warning Systems
Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped to warn drivers about potential dangers such as running stop signs or red lights. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the risk of collisions.
A new addition is a microsleep warning system, which activates when the vehicle exceeds 12 mph. This function monitors the driver’s eyelid movements via a camera integrated into the driver’s display, and is exclusively available with the MBUX Hyperscreen.
Active Intervention Features
Several active assist features are designed to intervene when necessary to prevent accidents. Active blind spot assist provides visual alerts regarding potential collisions during lane changes, operating between approximately 6 mph and 124 mph.
Should the driver disregard these warnings and attempt a lane change, the system can initiate corrective braking intervention at speeds exceeding 19 mph. Mercedes-Benz confirms this feature also functions while parked, alerting against exiting if approaching traffic is detected.
Active emergency stop assist is another crucial safety component. If the system determines the driver is unresponsive to the driving situation, it will bring the vehicle to a controlled stop within its lane.
This process isn't abrupt; it begins with audible and visual warnings, followed by gradual deceleration. Hazard lights are activated, and the seatbelt is briefly tightened to provide a haptic alert. A final “short, strong brake jolt” serves as a last warning before the vehicle comes to a complete standstill, potentially executing a single lane change if required.
DRIVE PILOT and Level 3 Automation
Mercedes-Benz also offers DRIVE PILOT, representing a SAE Level 3 conditional automated driving system. This technology enables hands-free driving under specific conditions.
Currently, regulatory constraints in Europe prevent the deployment of Level 3 automation in production vehicles on public roads. However, company officials have indicated they are nearing certification for a Level 3 system in Germany during the latter half of the year.
A Vehicle Designed to Adapt
The advanced technology within the EQS is fundamentally rooted in artificial intelligence, engineered to understand and respond to the driver’s habits. This capability is realized through sophisticated software and a comprehensive network of sensors.
Mercedes-Benz states that the EQS, depending on its configuration, can incorporate up to 350 sensors. These sensors meticulously monitor various parameters, including distances, velocities, acceleration rates, ambient lighting, precipitation levels, temperatures, seat occupancy, and even subtle cues like the driver’s blink or passenger conversations.
The data gathered by these sensors is then channeled to electronic control units – essentially onboard computers – where software algorithms analyze the information and initiate appropriate actions. Automotive journalist Tamara Warren of TechCrunch observed the vehicle’s capacity to learn her preferences during a test drive.
Mercedes-Benz illustrated several scenarios where these sensors and software work in concert, such as an interactive driving sound that dynamically adjusts based on factors like accelerator position, vehicle speed, and energy recuperation.
This adaptive learning is most evident when interacting with the MBUX infotainment system. The system proactively presents relevant functions to the user at opportune moments. It responds to changes in the environment and user behavior, offering a personalized experience.
Insights from the first-generation MBUX, initially featured in the 2019 Mercedes A Class, were crucial in refining the system. Data analysis revealed that the most frequently used features centered around Navigation, Radio/Media, and Telephone functionalities.
MBUX System Enhancements
This user data directly influenced the layout of the second-generation MBUX, particularly within the EQS. Consequently, the navigation application is consistently positioned in the center of the visual display unit.

As the driver utilizes the vehicle, frequently accessed functions that might otherwise be hidden within menus are brought to the forefront, or proactively suggested based on the time of day or vehicle location.
“The vehicle adapts to the driver as an individual, recognizing their preferences and routines,” explained Källenius. “It anticipates your next action, presenting options before you even consciously consider them.”
Källenius playfully likened the experience to “receiving a pizza delivery before you even feel hungry,” highlighting the system’s remarkable level of intuition.
Mercedes-Benz reports that over 20 additional functions, including birthday reminders, are automatically offered through artificial intelligence when relevant to the user. These intelligent suggestions, displayed on the “zero-layer” interface, are referred to as “Magic Modules.”
For example, if the driver consistently calls a specific contact during their evening commute, the vehicle will proactively suggest that call on the same day and at the same time. A contact card, including the contact’s photo if stored, will be displayed.
All MBUX suggestions are linked to the currently logged-in user profile. This ensures that if a different driver uses the EQS, with their own profile active, the personalized recommendations will not be displayed.
Similarly, if a driver habitually listens to a particular radio program during their commute, the system will offer that suggestion. Or, if they frequently utilize the hot-stone massage function, the system will automatically suggest activating it in colder weather.
This adaptive functionality extends to the vehicle’s driving characteristics. The MBUX will remember if the driver encounters a steep driveway or a series of speed bumps on their regular route. Upon approaching these GPS locations, the system will suggest raising the vehicle’s chassis for increased ground clearance.
Health and Wellbeing in Mercedes-Benz Vehicles
Modern vehicles are increasingly equipped with sensors designed to monitor driver condition. Drivers can now enhance this functionality by connecting a compatible smartwatch – such as the Mercedes-Benz vivoactive 3, the Mercedes-Benz Venu, or another Garmin device – to the vehicle’s energizing coach system.
This innovative coach analyzes the user’s physiological data and behavior to recommend personalized programs. These programs, including options like “freshness,” “warmth,” “vitality,” and “joy,” are tailored to the individual’s needs.
Data Integration and Program Activation
The Mercedes me app facilitates the transmission of crucial data from the smartwatch to the energizing coach. This data encompasses vital signs like pulse rate, stress level, and sleep quality. The wearer’s pulse rate, as measured by the Garmin wearable, is conveniently displayed on the vehicle’s central screen.
In practical terms, this integration translates to dynamic adjustments within the vehicle. Depending on the driver’s preferences and the AI system’s interpretation, elements like the interior lighting, climate control, audio settings, and seat configuration can be altered.
The system is seamlessly integrated with the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant, allowing drivers to activate desired programs with simple voice commands. For example, stating “I am stressed” will automatically initiate the Joy program.
Expanded Features in the EQS
While Mercedes S-Class owners may recognize these features, the EQS model builds upon the existing system with several enhancements. Three new energizing nature programs have been added: “forest glade,” “sounds of the sea,” and “summer rain.” Furthermore, training and helpful tips are now available.
Each nature program delivers a unique and immersive auditory experience, developed in collaboration with acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton. The “forest glade” program, for instance, combines the sounds of birdsong, rustling leaves, and a gentle breeze, complemented by calming music and subtle fragrance.
“Sounds of the sea” evokes a coastal atmosphere with soft music, wave sounds, and the calls of seagulls, enhanced by air conditioning airflow. “Summer rain” recreates the ambiance of a rain shower with sounds of raindrops, distant thunder, and ambient music.
Power Nap Functionality
For extended journeys, Mercedes-Benz has incorporated a power nap feature. Activated only when the vehicle is stationary, this program guides the user through three distinct phases: falling asleep, sleeping, and waking up.
During the falling asleep phase, the driver’s seat reclines, the windows and sunroof close, and air ionization is activated. Soothing sounds and a simulated starry sky on the central display promote relaxation. Upon waking, a soundscape is initiated, a fragrance is released, a brief massage is administered, and seat ventilation is activated. The seat returns to its upright position, and the sunroof opens.

The “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant, as previously noted, leverages natural language processing to respond to a wide variety of commands.
Mercedes-Benz has announced expanded capabilities for the assistant, including the ability to perform actions – such as answering incoming calls – without requiring the initial “Hey Mercedes” wake word.

Personal user profiles are securely stored within the “Mercedes me” cloud platform.
This cloud-based storage enables seamless access to these profiles across different Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with the latest MBUX generation.
Enhanced Security Measures
A robust security system is implemented to protect user data and preferences.
Authentication involves a PIN, followed by a combination of facial and voice recognition technologies.
This multi-factor authentication process facilitates access to personalized settings and validates digital payment transactions initiated from within the vehicle, according to the manufacturer.

The hyperscreen isn't a single unit, but rather three distinct displays unified under a single, curved glass cover. This creates a visually seamless experience for the user. Specifically, the driver display measures 12.3 inches, the central display is 17.7 inches, and the front passenger display also measures 12.3 inches.
Beyond its visual appeal, the MBUX Hyperscreen incorporates both haptic and force feedback technologies for enhanced interaction.
Ola Källenius remarked on the ambitious nature of the project, questioning the initial decision to create a one-meter, 41-centimeter curved, bonded glass piece for automotive use. He described the physical component as a remarkable feat of technological artistry.
