Amazon Selects Darlington for U.K. Drone Delivery Expansion

Amazon revealed on Monday its selection of Darlington, a town in North England, as the initial location for its anticipated expansion of drone delivery services within the U.K.

Expansion of Prime Air to both the U.K. and Italy had been projected for 2024. However, following a missed initial timeframe, the company refrained from providing a new launch schedule.

Current Status of the Project

Instead, Amazon has indicated a cautious approach, stating in its announcement that the project remains in its early phases and requires substantial further development.

The necessary planning application with local authorities and the Civil Aviation Authority – the U.K.’s equivalent of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration – is still pending submission by Amazon.

Once these approvals are secured, the company plans to commence recruitment for a team dedicated to launching the drone delivery service. A designated fulfillment center within the town, which has a population of 107,000, has been identified.

Amazon will also actively seek input from Darlington residents concerning the expansion plans.

Regulatory Hurdles and Prior Trials

Similar to the situation in the United States, the U.K.’s regulatory framework presents an initial challenge to Amazon’s expansion efforts.

This is a key reason for the company’s decision to begin trials in smaller cities and towns, avoiding the more heavily regulated airspace above major metropolitan areas like New York or London.

Prime Air initially commenced operations in June 2022 in Lockeford, California, followed by the addition of College Station, Texas, the subsequent month.

Recent Adjustments to U.S. Operations

Deliveries in California were discontinued in April 2024, less than two years after the launch, due to a strategic decision to “prioritize resources.”

The service continues to operate in College Station, and in November, it was launched in West Valley, Phoenix. Amazon has also hinted at a third U.S. location, though an official announcement is still forthcoming.

Prime Air Capabilities and Future Availability

To date, Prime Air has successfully delivered “thousands” of packages, aiming for delivery times of under one hour, utilizing drones designed and built internally by Amazon.

Upon full implementation, residents of Darlington will have the option to select Prime Air delivery for eligible items when shopping through Amazon U.K.
