The Rise of AI in Coding and Graphite's New Funding
AI coding assistants are experiencing a surge in popularity. Recent data from GitHub indicates that a significant majority of developers are now utilizing AI tools in their workflows.
Jared Friedman, a partner at Y Combinator, has stated that within YC’s W25 startup cohort, a quarter have generated 95% of their codebases using artificial intelligence.
Graphite Secures $52 Million in Series B Funding
Recognizing the potential in this evolving landscape, venture capitalists are actively investing in startups focused on AI-powered programming assistance. Graphite, a prominent player in this field, announced on Tuesday a successful $52 million Series B funding round.
Accel led the investment, with participation from Anthropic’s Anthology Fund, Menlo Ventures, Shopify Ventures, Figma Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, and The General Partnership.
Company Background and Evolution
Founded in 2020 by Tomas Reimers, Greg Foster, and Merrill Lutsky, Graphite initially focused on mobile development tooling. However, the company quickly pivoted its focus to code review.
Reimers brings experience as a former software developer at Facebook, while Foster previously worked as an engineer at both Airbnb and Google. Lutsky has a background in founding Posmetrics, a firm specializing in customer feedback solutions.
Graphite's Platform and Capabilities
Today, Graphite’s platform provides AI-driven feedback on code. It utilizes models from both Anthropic and OpenAI to identify potential errors and oversights.
“Graphite began as an internal tool designed to address our own challenges with code review,” explained Lutsky to TechCrunch. “After sharing it with a small group of former Meta engineers, demand grew rapidly, becoming impossible to ignore.”
The platform also offers features such as suggesting code modifications based on developer comments, summarizing code sections, and automatically generating fixes for code failures.
Introducing Diamond: An Automated Bug Detection Tool
Graphite is now introducing Diamond, a standalone AI tool specifically engineered to automatically detect coding bugs and errors. This represents the startup’s next major product offering.
A Competitive Landscape
The AI coding assistant market is becoming increasingly crowded. Competition includes established players like GitHub Copilot, as well as well-funded startups such as Cursor (Anysphere), Poolside, Augment, Magic, and Codeium.
Furthermore, companies like CodeRabbit and DeepCode specialize in AI-powered code review, while OpenAI and Anthropic – a Graphite investor – also offer their own assistive programming tools.
Graphite's Differentiators
Despite the competition, Graphite has successfully established a unique position in the market. This is partly due to its focus on addressing concerns regarding the reliability risks associated with AI-assisted coding.
Unlike some alternatives, Graphite allows customers to define patterns specific to their codebase and implement filters to protect sensitive information, thereby enhancing security.
Growth and Future Plans
“In 2024, our revenue experienced a 20-fold increase,” Lutsky stated. “We now serve tens of thousands of engineers across more than 500 companies, including Shopify, Snowflake, Figma, and Perplexity.”
This revenue growth, combined with the new funding, provides Graphite with a substantial runway, a clear path to profitability, and the resources to invest in further growth and AI development.
Free Access to Core Code Review
To further enhance its appeal, Graphite has made its core code review offering freely available to teams of all sizes. Previously, this benefit was limited to groups of 10 or fewer users.
To date, Graphite has raised approximately $81 million in venture capital. The company, which currently employs 30 people, intends to allocate the latest funding towards product development and expanding its team in New York City.
