Anthropic Limits Claude's Coding Capabilities - New Rate Limits

Anthropic Implements Weekly Usage Caps for Claude AI
Anthropic is introducing new weekly rate limits for its Claude AI model to manage resource consumption. This action is primarily aimed at addressing continuous, 24/7 operation of the Claude Code tool by some subscribers.
Addressing Policy Violations and Excessive Use
These rate limits are also intended to prevent violations of Claude’s usage policies, specifically the sharing of accounts and the resale of access to Claude Code. A limited number of users have been identified as engaging in these practices.
Implementation Timeline and Affected Plans
The new restrictions will take effect on August 28th for all subscribers to Anthropic’s tiered plans. This includes the $20 monthly Pro plan, as well as the $100 and $200 monthly Max plans, as communicated via email and a post on X.
Existing and New Limits
Current usage limits, which refresh every five hours, will remain in effect. In addition, two new weekly limits are being introduced, resetting every seven days. One limit applies to overall usage, while the other is specific to the most powerful model, Claude Opus 4.
Additional Usage Options for Max Subscribers
Subscribers to the Max plan have the option to purchase additional usage beyond the weekly rate limits, billed at standard API rates. This provides flexibility for users with higher demands.
Recent Introduction of Rate Limits and Service Disruptions
This announcement follows the quiet implementation of initial rate limits for Claude Code several weeks ago. Anthropic acknowledged the issues at that time but refrained from providing detailed explanations. Claude Code has experienced frequent outages – at least seven partial or major disruptions in the last month – potentially linked to intensive, non-stop usage.
Demand and Impact on Users
According to Anthropic spokesperson Amie Rotherham, Claude Code has seen “unprecedented demand” since its launch. It is anticipated that the majority of users will not experience any noticeable changes, with the limits affecting less than 5% of subscribers based on current usage patterns.
Specific Usage Estimates by Plan
Anthropic estimates that Pro users can expect between 40 and 80 hours of Sonnet 4 access through Claude Code within their weekly limits. Max plan subscribers ($100/month) can anticipate 140 to 280 hours of Sonnet 4 and 15 to 35 hours of Opus 4. The $200/month Max plan offers 240 to 480 hours of Sonnet 4 and 24 to 40 hours of Opus 4.
Factors Affecting Usage and Plan Value
The company notes that actual usage may vary depending on the size of the codebase and other variables. Anthropic asserts that the $200 Max plan provides 20 times more usage capacity than the Pro plan. Rate limits are triggered by token consumption, not simply elapsed time.
Computational Resource Constraints
Anthropic has previously stated that it faces significant constraints regarding computational resources, a common challenge for most AI model providers currently. Many AI companies are actively expanding their AI data center infrastructure to meet the growing demands of both AI model training and service delivery.
Industry-Wide Pricing Adjustments
Several providers of AI coding tools are re-evaluating their pricing strategies. Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, altered its pricing model for its $20/month Pro plan in June to curb abuse by power users. Replit, another AI coding tool provider, also implemented similar pricing changes in the same month.
Commitment to Long-Term Solutions
In a communication to Claude subscribers, Anthropic expressed its commitment to “supporting long-running use cases through other options in the future.” However, the company believes that these rate limits will help ensure reliable service for all users in the immediate term.
Update 7/29 10 a.m. PT: This article has been updated to include statements from an Anthropic spokesperson and further details regarding the company’s weekly rate limits.
