Apple Partners with Alibaba for China AI Launch

Apple and Alibaba Collaborate on Apple Intelligence in China
A new report from The Information, released on Tuesday, indicates that Apple is establishing a partnership with Alibaba to introduce its Apple Intelligence platform to the Chinese market.
This collaboration follows Apple’s consideration, and subsequent dismissal, of potential alliances with prominent AI companies like DeepSeek and ByteDance.
Initial Partnership Challenges
Initially, Apple had chosen Baidu as its partner for deploying Apple Intelligence within China.
However, difficulties in adapting Baidu’s AI models proved insurmountable, leading to the change in strategy.
Impact on iPhone Sales in China
Despite China’s significance as a key market, the Apple Intelligence feature has not yet been launched there.
CEO Tim Cook directly attributed a recent 11% decrease in iPhone sales in China to the absence of Apple Intelligence.
This gap in features has been quickly exploited by domestic smartphone manufacturers, notably Huawei, who have moved to capitalize on the opportunity.
Timing with iPhone SE Launch
The news of the Alibaba partnership coincides with expectations surrounding the release of Apple’s fourth-generation iPhone SE.
This more affordable iPhone model has historically been crucial for driving sales in both China and India, the world’s two largest smartphone markets.
Broader AI Partnership Strategy
Apple’s initial launch of Apple Intelligence in the U.S. involved a partnership with OpenAI, granting access to ChatGPT through the Siri assistant.
The company has also expressed its willingness to explore further collaborations, potentially including integration with Google’s Gemini AI model.
Apple is actively seeking diverse AI partnerships to expand the reach and functionality of its Apple Intelligence platform globally.
