Apple Watch Fitness: Sweat Smarter with Apple's New Workout Features

Apple Unveils AI-Powered Workout Coach: Workout Buddy
At the WWDC 2025 conference, Apple introduced Workout Buddy, an innovative AI designed to function as a personal workout coach.
This intelligent tool analyzes data from your ongoing exercise sessions and comprehensive fitness records. This includes metrics such as your speed, distance covered, completed activity rings, and overall training intensity.
Real-Time Coaching and Personalized Voice
Workout Buddy provides real-time guidance during workouts. It leverages Apple Intelligence on the iPhone and a text-to-speech model to deliver motivating feedback.
The encouragement is delivered through a dynamically generated voice, specifically crafted to emulate the tone of a professional fitness instructor.
Notably, the voice profiles are created using recordings from trainers featured in Apple’s Fitness+ app and studio. Users will have the option to select from a variety of voices to suit their individual preferences.
Enhanced Workout App Features
The Workout app, available on both Apple Watch and iPhone, is receiving updates to provide a more engaging experience.
Workouts will now begin with an initial motivational message. The app will also highlight key achievements during the session, such as reaching specific distances or achieving a fastest mile.
Real-time data, including average heart rate, will also be displayed.
Upon completion, the AI will summarize your performance, detailing average pace, heart rate, and any milestones attained, like earning a 10K run badge.
Availability and Privacy
Workout Buddy will initially be offered in English across a range of popular workout types.
Apple emphasizes that Workout Buddy is designed with a focus on user privacy and personalization, a theme consistently highlighted throughout WWDC.
Workout App Redesign and Music Integration
The Workout app on Apple Watch is also getting a redesigned layout. Features like Custom Workout and Race Route will be more readily accessible.
New media capabilities have been integrated, allowing for seamless music playback.
- Users can allow Apple Music to automatically curate playlists based on their workout or listening history.
- The app will also suggest relevant playlists or podcasts based on workout type and user preferences.
