Apple WWDC 2023: Remains Online-Only, Starts June 7

Apple Confirms Second Consecutive All-Virtual WWDC
Apple announced today that its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will once again be held entirely online. This marks the second consecutive year the tech giant has opted for a virtual format.
The initial shift to an online-only event occurred in 2020 due to the widespread disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions on large gatherings.
Despite increasing vaccination rates globally, a full return to in-person tech conferences remains uncertain for the remainder of the year. WWDC21 is scheduled to take place from June 7th to June 11th.
Developer Accessibility and Event Scale
Susan Prescott, VP of Developer Relations, stated that Apple is focused on delivering the “biggest and best” WWDC yet. The company aims to provide developers with innovative tools to facilitate the creation of applications that impact daily life.
The virtual format offers significant benefits, notably increased accessibility. Last year’s online conference was reportedly the largest in the event’s history.
Apple anticipates approximately 28 million developers worldwide will participate in this year’s WWDC. Qualified developers will have complimentary access to all event content, eliminating travel and accommodation costs.
Software and Potential Hardware Announcements
The conference will cover updates across Apple’s entire operating system ecosystem. This includes the latest versions of iOS/iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
Last year’s WWDC saw the unveiling of Apple’s transition to its own silicon for Mac computers. While hardware announcements have been inconsistent in previous years, the company may reveal new products given supply chain improvements.
Developer Programs and Community Support
Beyond the main keynote and developer sessions, Apple will host programs like the Swift Student Challenge. This competition encourages and recognizes young coders.
Furthermore, Apple will contribute $1 million to SJ Aspires, an educational initiative located in San Jose, California. San Jose has traditionally served as the location for the in-person WWDC event.
This donation underscores Apple’s commitment to supporting education within the local community.
