Audi Unveils 2022 e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT

Audi officially presented the 2022 e-tron Quattro GT and the performance-enhanced RS e-tron GT on Tuesday. These models represent leading additions to the German manufacturer’s expanding range of electric vehicles, marking a new direction beyond the previously dominant selection of crossovers and SUVs.

Expanding the e-tron Lineup

The Audi e-tron GT and RS variants are the third and fourth fully electric vehicles within the company’s U.S. offerings. They follow the introduction of the 2018 e-tron SUV and the 2019 e-tron Sportback. Further broadening the portfolio, the Audi Q4 e-tron – another SUV – will become the automaker’s fifth electric vehicle.

These e-tron models are integral to Audi’s ambitious strategy of launching over 30 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid models by the year 2025.

A New Interpretation of the GT

“This vehicle embodies a fresh and highly progressive take on the classic Gran Turismo concept,” stated Marc Lichte, Audi’s head of design, during Tuesday’s presentation. “It combines the proportions of a supersports car with the practicality of a genuine four-seater, representing a completely novel approach.”

Performance and Range

Production of the e-tron GT commences this spring, with U.S. market availability scheduled for this summer. The vehicle delivers a blend of performance and luxury within a sporty design. The standard e-tron GT features dual motors generating 469 horsepower – or 522 hp with “overboost” functionality.

It is estimated to achieve a range of 238 miles utilizing its 93.4-kilowatt battery. According to the European WLTP standard, the e-tron GT’s range extends to 298 miles.

RS e-tron GT: Enhanced Power

The RS e-tron GT utilizes the same front motor as the base GT, but incorporates a more potent rear motor. This configuration allows for a combined output of 590 horsepower, peaking at 637 horsepower with overboost activation.

Consequently, the RS e-tron GT can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds and reach a maximum track speed of 155 mph, according to the company. The RS variant is projected to have an EPA range of 232 miles.

Official EPA range estimations for both models are currently pending.

Rapid Charging Capabilities

Both vehicles are equipped with an 800-volt electrical architecture – a feature shared with the Porsche Taycan. This architecture enables the e-tron GT, similar to the Taycan, to recharge its battery from 5% to 80% in a swift 22.5 minutes, positioning it among the fastest charging vehicles available.

Collaboration with Porsche

The e-tron GT shares more than just the 800-volt electrical architecture with the Porsche Taycan. Audi and Porsche, both subsidiaries of the VW Group, collaborated in the co-development of the e-tron GT and the Taycan. This collaboration extends to the shared chassis and J1 EV battery platform.

Interior Features and Technology

The e-tron GT’s interior features a standard 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit digital instrument cluster and a central 10.1-inch touchscreen. These interfaces allow drivers to manage music, navigation, and vehicle controls, including features specific to electric vehicles such as charging station location.

An optional head-up display is available as an upgrade for enhanced driver information.

Sustainable Materials

The vehicle’s interior is standard with a leather-free design, incorporating recycled materials like Dinamica, a synthetic suede. A Nappa leather option is also offered as an upgrade.

Pricing and Availability

The e-tron GT quattro base model carries a starting price of $99,900, with a higher trim level available for $107,100. The RS e-tron GT begins at $139,900. These prices increase further with the addition of optional features, such as the company’s Matrix LED headlights, currently exclusive to the European market.
