Beeflow, a startup company, recently secured $8.3 million in Series A funding. Their mission is to simultaneously address the decline in bee populations and enhance the efficiency of farming practices.

Innovative Technology for Bee Health

Beeflow utilizes unique, scientifically-backed technology designed to improve bee health, particularly when temperatures drop. Extensive research has revealed that providing bees with specific plant-derived nutrients and molecules can decrease bee mortality rates by as much as 70%.

Furthermore, this nutritional support enhances bee performance, especially in challenging weather conditions.

Understanding Bee Performance and Pollination

Bees are the world’s primary natural pollinators. They facilitate the transformation of flowers into fruits by transferring pollen as they move between plants.

Farmers frequently ‘rent’ bee colonies from beekeepers to ensure adequate pollination of their crops. Traditionally, measuring the effectiveness of this process has been difficult, and controlling bee behavior has been largely impossible.

Beeflow's Impact on Pollination Efficiency

Beeflow’s technology strengthens bees, enabling them to fly up to seven times further in colder weather compared to untreated bees. This increased flight range translates to more effective and efficient crop pollination for farmers.

ToBEE: Targeted Pollination Training

In addition to reducing bee mortality, Beeflow offers a product called ToBEE. This innovative system trains bees to focus their pollination efforts on specific crops, such as blueberries or almonds.

The combined use of these Beeflow products has demonstrated the potential to increase crop yields for farmers by up to 90 percent.

Beeflow's Business Model

Beeflow operates through a dual business model. They both lease their own bee colonies to farmers for pollination services and collaborate with beekeepers, integrating them into the Beeflow network.

Beekeepers do not incur costs for utilizing Beeflow’s technology, but they do transfer the rights to their existing farmer relationships.

Geographic Focus and Future Expansion

The startup was founded by Matias Viel, originally from Argentina. Currently, Beeflow is primarily active in Latin America and the West Coast of the United States.

Plans are underway to expand operations to the East Coast of the U.S. and Mexico.

Scaling Operations to Meet Demand

“Our biggest hurdle now lies in operational scaling and effective execution,” stated Viel. “The demand is substantial, necessitating rapid growth in both our team and our operational capabilities.”

Investment and Backing

The recent financing round was spearheaded by Ospraie Ag Science, with contributions from Future Ventures’ Steve Jurvetson, Jeff Wilke, Vectr Ventures, SOSV’s IndieBio, and Grid Exponential.
