Bitly Acquires EgoEditor: Expanding into QR Code Technology

Bitly Acquires Egoditor GmbH to Expand Customer Connection Capabilities

Link management specialist Bitly announced on Wednesday the acquisition of Egoditor GmbH, a Germany-based firm specializing in QR code technology, with their primary offering being the QR Code Generator.

While the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, Bitly’s CEO, Toby Gabriner, revealed it involved a combination of cash and stock. Upon completion, the merged entity will boast over 325,000 paying customers, exceeding 5 million active users, a workforce of 180 employees, and an annual recurring revenue surpassing $75 million.

Strategic Alignment with Bitly’s Growth Objectives

This acquisition, representing Bitly’s first, directly supports the company’s ambition to establish itself as a leading global SaaS provider. The goal is to empower organizations to effectively engage with their customer base and facilitate connections to digital experiences.

Coinciding with the acquisition, Bitly unveiled its Customer Connections platform. This platform serves as a comprehensive resource, integrating link management, QR code functionality, and link-in-bio tools into a single solution. Bitly has been strategically broadening its offerings beyond simple link shortening for several years.

The decision to acquire Egoditor, rather than develop in-house QR code software, was driven by Egoditor’s decade-long leadership in the QR code space. Shared customers and complementary functionalities made the integration a logical progression, according to Gabriner.

“We observed the evolving market trends and recognized a natural extension for Bitly,” he stated. “Following the launch of our own QR code offering and its substantial customer adoption, we gained further confidence in its demand.”

Egoditor’s Global Reach and Expertise

Headquartered in Bielefeld, Germany, Egoditor delivers complete solutions for the design, deployment, management, and analysis of QR codes. Founded in 2009 by Nils Engelking and Nils Drescher, the company currently serves over 10 million users across more than 190 countries.

Notable clients include prominent organizations such as Starbucks, Zalando, and the Salvation Army.

The Resurgence of QR Codes

Although QR codes have existed since the 1990s, widespread adoption was initially hindered by the need for dedicated reader apps. Previous attempts by companies like Snap to popularize them met with limited success.

Gabriner explained that the integration of QR code scanning capabilities directly into smartphone cameras by Google and Apple was a pivotal moment. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated their use.

“The pandemic necessitated touchless interaction methods between customers and businesses, fundamentally altering consumer behavior,” he shared with TechCrunch. “Applications have expanded dramatically, extending beyond restaurant menus to encompass sectors like real estate, retail, non-profit organizations, and even dental practices. We are still witnessing the emergence of new use cases on a weekly basis.”

Integration and Future Growth

Bitly is currently integrating the Egoditor team, with all existing members continuing their roles. The company is actively expanding its workforce, currently listing over 50 open positions across its German and U.S. offices.

Gabriner views this acquisition as a catalyst for growth, combining two rapidly expanding companies. Bitly has experienced over 170% growth in its customer base in the last 18 months, and its link-in-bio feature is currently undergoing private beta testing.

“We are incredibly enthusiastic about this acquisition, as it positions the company for significant advancement,” Gabriner concluded. “This provides a strong foundation for introducing new products and solutions, transitioning from a single-product focus to a multi-product portfolio. We are operating at peak performance and prepared to further accelerate our growth trajectory.”
