Blameless Raises $30M to Revolutionize Software Lifecycles

Blameless Secures $30 Million in Series B Funding
Blameless, a leading site reliability engineering (SRE) platform, revealed on Tuesday the successful completion of a $30 million Series B funding round. This investment was spearheaded by Third Point Ventures, with significant participation from Accel, Decibel, and Lightspeed Venture Partners, bringing the company’s total funding to exceed $50 million.
Understanding Site Reliability Engineering
Site reliability engineering represents an evolution of DevOps principles, specifically tailored for more intricate operational environments. It focuses on applying software engineering principles to infrastructure and operations problems.
Company History and Growth
Emerging from a stealth phase in 2019, Blameless, headquartered in San Mateo, California, initially secured $20 million in seed and Series A funding. Since its inception, the company has matured into a comprehensive software platform.
Platform Capabilities
The Blameless platform is designed to unify engineering teams by providing essential context, establishing clear operational boundaries, and automating key workflows. This facilitates faster issue resolution during software system development and maintenance.
Evolution of Business Approach
Originally, Blameless collaborated with technologically advanced teams within large organizations, such as Home Depot, assisting them in adopting SRE practices. However, over the past two years, the demand for guidance from resident SRE architect Kurt Anderson has prompted a shift in the company’s business model, according to co-founder and CEO Lyon Wong.
Industry Trends and Competition
A growing trend sees companies seeking external support for SRE implementation. Google Cloud, for instance, launched its Mission Critical Services support in March, offering consultancy services. Similarly, Nobl9 secured $21 million in Series B funding in February to provide tools for service-level-objective-centric operations, a core component of SRE.
Expanding Market Reach
Blameless is now attracting interest from a broader range of companies, including those in enterprise, logistics, and healthcare sectors. These organizations, while not exclusively technology-focused, are recognizing the critical need for robust SRE practices.
Addressing Reliability Shortfalls
“Organizations are increasingly aware of their reliability gaps and are seeking guidance on how to improve,” Anderson explained. “Companies lacking established processes often resort to ad-hoc responses, but require a more targeted approach, ensuring the appropriate personnel are involved.”
Future Plans and Funding Allocation
Lyon Wong intends to allocate the new funding towards bolstering key leadership positions, refining the company’s go-to-market strategy, and accelerating product development. This will enable Blameless to effectively target larger enterprise clients.
Revenue Growth and Expansion
Having doubled its revenue in the past year, Blameless plans to extend its services to encompass all customer segments, including small and emerging businesses, in addition to its existing midmarket and large enterprise clients. The company also anticipates a doubling of its workforce within the next three quarters.
Board of Directors Update
As part of this funding round, Dan Moskowitz, a partner at Third Point Ventures, will join Blameless’ board of directors, alongside Lyon Wong, Accel partner Vas Natarajan, and Lightspeed partner Ravi Mhatre.
Investor Perspective
“Blameless empowers engineering teams to concentrate on code development, a crucial benefit,” stated Moskowitz. “The potential market for Blameless is substantial, as many teams struggle with fragmented, costly, and incomplete in-house solutions.”
