BMW iDrive 8.5: Next-Gen Infotainment System Previewed

During CES 2021, BMW shared an initial preview of the future iDrive system, marking two decades since its original introduction in the 2001 7 Series. The presentation largely reviewed the evolution of BMW’s infotainment system, but also offered additional details and visuals of the upcoming iteration, which will first appear on the expansive displays of the soon-to-be-released iX.
The new design presents a noticeably updated and vibrant aesthetic. From the materials BMW released, existing BMW owners should find the transition relatively straightforward, as the fundamental structure remains recognizable.
Despite recent additions like BMW’s dedicated voice assistant and gesture controls, the iDrive controller on the center console will remain a feature, although it appears to be receiving some stylistic refinements. It’s evident that BMW does not intend to eliminate physical controls in the near future.

The reasoning behind this approach is that modern vehicles, equipped with numerous sensors and connectivity features, frequently possess more data than the driver. BMW states that this has shaped the design of the new iDrive, though specific details are not yet being disclosed. From the available materials, however, current BMW drivers should experience a manageable learning curve, as the general layout maintains a degree of familiarity.

This, in turn, signifies another significant shift, as the quantity and intricacy of functions within a vehicle continue to increase.”
