Hyundai Deploys Boston Dynamics' Robot for Factory Safety

In June, Hyundai finalized the acquisition of a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics. The Korean automaker likely envisions integrating the Massachusetts-based company’s technologies into its innovative mobility concepts. Currently, however, the focus is on deploying existing robotic capabilities.

Hyundai has unveiled the “Factory Safety Service Robot,” a somewhat uninspired name. For the sake of conciseness, the company is referring to the unit simply as “the Robot,” a practice this article will also adopt, given the length of the full designation.

Robot's Primary Function

The Robot is fundamentally a modified version of the Spot robot, specifically engineered for conducting safety inspections within factory environments. Hyundai is initiating its first pilot program at a Kia plant in Seoul, demonstrating an immediate application of the technology.

This iteration of Spot, or the Robot, is outfitted with both lidar and a thermal camera. These sensors are utilized to scan for elevated temperatures, potential fire hazards, and unsecured doors.

Upon detecting anomalies, the Robot transmits alerts via a secure platform. Real-time image and data sharing is a key feature, and it can function either autonomously or under remote control, mirroring Spot’s capabilities.

“The Factory Safety Service Robot represents our initial collaborative effort with Boston Dynamics,” stated Hyundai’s Dong Jin Hyun. “This Robot will play a crucial role in identifying risks and ensuring the safety of personnel in industrial settings.”

Hyun continued, “We are committed to developing intelligent services that proactively detect hazards within industrial sites and contribute to a secure work environment through ongoing collaboration with Boston Dynamics.”

Boston Dynamics recently announced expanded data collection features for the robot, further enhancing its utility and potential applications.
