Box Acquires SignRequest for $55 Million

This morning, Box announced its agreement to acquire SignRequest, an e-signature startup, for a sum of $55 million. This acquisition provides Box with an integrated signature capability that was previously absent, and it facilitates the development of new operational processes.

Expanding Digital Workflows

Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, stated that the company has observed a growing demand from its user base for increased digitization of their workflows. The acquisition is strategically aimed at providing a signature feature directly within the Box environment, which will be branded as Box Sign. “Box Sign will enable customers to enjoy a fluid e-signature experience within the platform where their content is already stored,” Levie explained.

Although Box currently maintains partnerships with various e-signature providers, this acquisition establishes a dedicated solution built directly into Box, with integration scheduled to begin this summer. The recent pandemic underscored the importance of remote work capabilities for safety and efficiency.

Addressing Digital Workflow Gaps

Even as in-person interactions resume, the ability to conduct operations entirely in the cloud and eliminate paper-based processes will continue to accelerate efficiency. Levie emphasized that the shift to remote work rapidly exposed weaknesses in existing digital workflows for many organizations.

“The widespread transition to remote work immediately revealed digital workflow deficiencies across numerous enterprises. E-signature proved to be a significant area of concern, as many sectors still heavily rely on traditional paper-based methods,” he noted.

The Content Cloud Vision

Levie highlighted that a native signature component was a crucial missing element from the Box platform. “Considering platforms like Snowflake – the data cloud, Salesforce – the sales cloud, and Adobe – the marketing cloud, our ambition is to establish the content cloud. We envision a single platform capable of managing the complete content lifecycle. E-signature represented a key gap in essential workflows,” he stated.

This integration is anticipated to unlock new possibilities across a range of scenarios, enabling smoother interactions between Box’s various features. “Integrating SignRequest will allow us to more effectively support critical workflows such as customer contracts, vendor onboarding, healthcare patient intake, and supply chain collaboration,” Levie clarified.

Industry Context and Analyst Perspective

It is noteworthy that Dropbox acquired HelloSign for $230 million two years ago to achieve similar functionality and workflow enhancements. However, Alan Pelz-Sharpe, an analyst at Deep Analysis, a content management market research firm, believes this acquisition was not primarily a reactive measure.

“What’s particularly interesting is Box’s intention to integrate SignRequest and offer it as part of its standard service. This is what truly stands out, as e-signature solutions are often separate products with limited adoption. While the Dropbox acquisition played a role, addressing this internal gap was a priority regardless,” Pelz-Sharpe explained.

SignRequest Background and Future Plans

Founded in the Netherlands in 2014, SignRequest has not publicly disclosed any funding rounds according to PitchBook and Crunchbase. The company’s employees will be integrated into Box to develop the Box Sign feature.

Existing SignRequest customers will be offered the opportunity to migrate to Box Sign over the next year, gaining access to the broader Box platform capabilities, as communicated on the company’s website.

Pricing and Team Location

The core Box Sign functionality will be included within the Box platform at no extra cost, though more advanced features may be offered as paid add-ons. The acquisition is expected to finalize shortly, with the SignRequest team remaining based in the Netherlands.
