Canoo Electric Pickup Truck: Work & Play Combined

Canoo Unveils New Electric Pickup Truck
Los Angeles-based Canoo has introduced its latest electric vehicle – a pickup truck, marking the company’s third model. This new offering distinguishes itself from conventional EV and diesel pickups by eschewing sharp angles and bulky engine compartments, targeting both commercial users and recreational vehicle enthusiasts.
Space Efficiency and Design
The truck, which Canoo claims is the most space-efficient in the market, was previewed Wednesday evening prior to its official unveiling on Thursday. It shares a common design philosophy with the company’s other two vehicles.
However, the core innovation lies in Canoo’s foundational platform. All of its vehicles utilize the same underlying architecture, with modifications primarily focused on the cabin, or “top hat,” for each new model. This proprietary platform resembles a flat skateboard, integrating the essential components of the electric powertrain.
Dimensions and Capabilities
The truck is scheduled to be available for preorders starting in the second quarter of 2021, with anticipated deliveries beginning in 2023. It measures 184 inches in length, notably shorter than the Tesla Cybertruck (231 inches) and the Rivian R1T (218 inches).
A key feature is its extendable bed, which can increase the truck bed length from six feet to eight feet, achieving a total length of 213 inches. The vehicle is projected to deliver up to 600 horsepower and offer a battery range exceeding 200 miles.
Versatility and Accessories
Like other Canoo vehicles, this pickup offers extensive customization options. These include bed dividers and a camper shell that transforms the truck into a van.
Furthermore, accessories such as a rooftop tent – showcased in promotional materials – suggest Canoo is exploring an accessories business to complement its vehicle sales.
Additional features include a cargo storage area with a fold-down work table and electrical outlets, flip-down side tables, a hidden step with integrated storage, and a roof rack.
Company Background and Future Outlook
Canoo executive chairman Tony Aquila stated that the pickup truck is designed to be both robust and highly productive. He emphasized its adaptability, catering to both professional and personal use cases.
In December, Canoo became a publicly traded company through a merger with Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp., resulting in a market valuation of $2.4 billion. This move aligns the company with other EV manufacturers like Fisker Inc., Nikola Corp., and Lordstown Motors, who have also opted for similar routes to NASDAQ listing.
