Bunq Expands Services with New Features for Spanish Users

Bunq, the challenger bank headquartered in Amsterdam, is enhancing its platform with several new functionalities. Alongside existing support for Dutch, German, and French bank accounts, both current and prospective users in Spain can now obtain a Spanish IBAN.

The Challenge of European IBANs

While European IBANs are designed for seamless transactions across Europe, practical application often falls short. Employers or service providers sometimes insist on a local bank account. Consequently, individuals relocating within Europe frequently prioritize opening a local banking relationship.

Bunq's Solution: Local IBAN Access

Recognizing this issue, Bunq is offering a workaround, similar to other challenger banks. The “Accept my IBAN” lobbying initiative aims for broader acceptance, but Bunq provides immediate access to local account numbers. Users can associate IBANs from multiple European nations with their account.

Adding a new local IBAN incurs a one-time charge of €9.99.

Currency Conversion and Holding

Inspired by competitors like Revolut, Wise, and Vivid Money, Bunq is introducing multi-currency capabilities. Users will soon be able to receive, convert, and store funds in various currencies.

For example, individuals receiving salaries in a non-Eurozone country during an internship can directly deposit those funds into their Bunq account. Initially, USD accounts are being launched, with plans for further currency additions.

Additional Feature Updates

Bunq is also rolling out several quality-of-life improvements. These include:

  • Reminders sent one day prior to direct debit transactions.
  • A dedicated subscription management view, displaying current subscriptions and renewal dates.
  • An enhanced search functionality.
  • Automated acceptance of direct debits and payment requests from contacts, with configurable spending limits.

Recent Funding and Market Presence

Bunq recently announced its intention to secure $228 million (€193 million) in funding, valuing the company at $1.9 billion (€1.6 billion). This investment is currently awaiting approval from the Dutch banking regulator.

Currently, Bunq operates in 29 European markets and manages over €1 billion in user deposits.
