ClimaCell Announces Plans for Dedicated Weather Satellite Constellation

ClimaCell, a weather data and forecasting company, has revealed its intention to deploy a constellation of small weather satellites. These satellites will be equipped with radar technology.

This initiative is designed to enhance the company’s capacity to gather comprehensive global weather data and refine its forecasting precision. The initial launch is anticipated during the latter portion of 2022.

Addressing Gaps in Current Weather Monitoring

According to ClimaCell CEO Shimon Elkabetz, existing ground-based radar systems, crucial for tracking precipitation and cloud formations, provide incomplete coverage, even within the United States.

This limited coverage frequently complicates even fundamental weather predictions. While space-based radar satellites exist, their infrequent revisits – typically every three days – restrict their practical application.

ClimaCell aims to overcome these limitations with its satellite constellation, promising hourly data revisit rates.

From Sensing and Modeling to Space-Powered SaaS

“We began by developing unique sensing and modeling techniques to enhance weather prediction accuracy globally,” explains Elkabetz. “Subsequently, we created a unified software platform adaptable to diverse industries and applications.”

He continues, “Now, we are transitioning into a Space-powered SaaS company. We are launching a satellite constellation to improve weather forecasting worldwide.

For the first time, an active radar constellation will encircle Earth, delivering real-time observations to power weather forecasting at every location.

A Growing Trend in Satellite Deployment

This represents a significant advancement for ClimaCell, and it signals a broader trend within the industry. Launching a dedicated satellite fleet was once prohibitively expensive and complex.

However, several factors have changed this landscape, including increased accessibility to launch services, advancements in radar satellite construction, and the emergence of supporting services.

These include ground stations offered as a service by providers like AWS and Microsoft, alongside a thriving ecosystem of specialized satellite manufacturers.

Vendor Selection and Future Plans

The ClimaCell team is currently evaluating potential vendors for satellite construction and launch services. A final decision regarding the chosen partner is expected in the near future.

They are actively engaged in discussions with numerous companies to determine the optimal solution for their needs.
