codesee Raises $7M Seed to Enhance Code Visualization

CodeSee Secures $7 Million in Secondary Seed Funding
CodeSee, a startup focused on enhancing code comprehension, has announced a $7 million secondary seed round. This investment supplements the $3 million the company raised in 2020.
Investment Details
The funding round was spearheaded by Wellington Access Ventures, Plexo Capital, and Menlo Ventures. Several angel investors who participated in the initial seed investment also contributed to this round.
Addressing Codebase Complexity
Shanea Leven, CEO and co-founder of CodeSee, explains that her company tackles the universal challenge of understanding large codebases. This difficulty impacts developers of all skill levels, particularly when onboarding to new projects.
“Developers often experience apprehension when facing a new codebase, unsure of the time required to become proficient and contribute effectively,” Leven stated. “This feeling persists regardless of experience, as codebases are in constant flux.”
Product Development and Growth
Since the launch of their open-source OSS Port project last September, CodeSee has experienced continued growth and product development. The company is nearing the release of a paid product version, currently undergoing testing with select companies.
New Tools and Features
CodeSee is actively developing a teams and enterprise offering. They are also introducing Review Maps, a new tool designed to improve code review visualization within GitHub.
Instead of a simple list of modified files, Review Maps provide a contextual overview of changes and their relationship to the entire codebase.
Visualizing Code Changes
“Review Maps allow developers to visualize their contributions within the broader context of the codebase,” Leven explained. “This is especially valuable for large, complex projects with frequent updates.”
The tool addresses the issue of overwhelming code reviews. Large reviews, often exceeding 600 files, are frequently skipped due to their complexity.
“With Review Maps, developers can zoom out to grasp the overall impact of their changes, leading to more thorough and confident code reviews,” Leven added.
Team Expansion
Currently, CodeSee employs 13 individuals. The company intends to expand its team by adding five to six more employees throughout the current year.
