Conan O'Brien's New HBO Max Variety Show

Conan O’Brien is transitioning to the streaming world. His long-running nightly talk program, “Conan,” will conclude its decade-long broadcast on TBS in June of the following year, as he prepares to debut a new, weekly variety show on the HBO Max streaming platform.
“Johnny Carson imparted the most valuable career guidance to me in 1993: ‘Transition to a streaming platform as quickly as you can,’ ” O’Brien stated. “I am excited to continue performing my work on HBO Max, and I anticipate receiving complimentary access.”
The announcement does not specify a premiere date or further information regarding the new program, but it does emphasize the continuation of O’Brien’s professional association with WarnerMedia, the parent company of both HBO Max and TBS. Furthermore, it confirms that he will continue producing his “Conan Without Borders” international travel programs for the cable channel.
O’Brien has a proven history of adapting to changing media landscapes. Previously a comedy writer – notably responsible for the highly regarded “Marge vs. the Monorail” episode of “The Simpsons” – he initially became a late-night television host in the early 1990s, and subsequently moved to TBS following a brief tenure hosting “The Tonight Show.”
He has also recently initiated the podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” (widely considered to be exceptionally entertaining). In fact, O’Brien participated in this year’s Disrupt conference to discuss the podcast’s achievements.
Responding to a question about his plans for continuing in late-night television, O’Brien’s answer may have foreshadowed this recent development: “These various avenues are coming together. My advice to everyone watching TechCrunch Disrupt is to broaden their perspectives. Engaging in podcasting doesn’t preclude me from potentially pursuing other opportunities, which may not necessarily be with Turner, but could be with any organization.”
