Bitcoin and Ethereum Price Crash: Crypto Market Downturn

Following a surge to unprecedented valuations, a renewed wave of public interest, and a period of widespread discussion, cryptocurrencies are currently experiencing a downturn in value.
Bitcoin, the most widely recognized cryptocurrency, reached a high of over $41,000 per coin on January 8th. As of today, it has decreased in value by slightly more than 23% over the past 24 hours, with each bitcoin now trading at approximately $31,800.
In a similar fashion, ether, the digital asset linked to the Ethereum blockchain, peaked at just above $1,300 on January 10th. Today, after a more substantial decline of nearly 29% in the last 24 hours, ether tokens are valued at around $960 each.
Despite these recent drops, the value of these coins remains significantly higher than previous levels, with bitcoin achieving new record highs this month and ether approaching its peak from early 2018. According to CoinMarketCap, a cryptocurrency market data platform acquired by Binance exchange in 2020, the total value of all cryptocurrencies has decreased by just over 22% in the last day, settling at $832.4 billion.
The relative significance of these recent declines, compared to the fact that cryptocurrencies were recently valued at over $1 trillion collectively, depends on individual viewpoints regarding this asset category.
However, companies concentrating on the digital token market have enjoyed a strong beginning to the year. Coinbase, a U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange, submitted its initial public offering filing in late 2020. The recent increase in bitcoin’s price, for instance, has resulted in record trading activity for the coin, potentially leading to substantial revenue for Coinbase and its competitors.
Consequently, the venture capital sector may become more receptive to businesses in this field, potentially providing funding to cryptocurrency projects that may have struggled to secure investment since 2017.
