Gadget Secures $8.5 Million in Seed Funding

Gadget, a productivity-focused company for developers, headquartered in Ottawa, has successfully closed an $8.5 million seed funding round. This investment was spearheaded by prominent venture capital firms Sequoia Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners.

The funding initiative also garnered support from several influential figures in the tech industry. These include Greg Brockman, co-founder and CTO of OpenAI; Koen Koppen, the CTO of Klarna; and Solmaz Shahalizadeh, who leads data science and engineering at Shopify.

Addressing Developer Challenges

Established in 2020 by Harry Brundage and Mohammad Hashemi, Gadget is dedicated to streamlining the development process for e-commerce applications. The platform’s core objective is to significantly reduce the time developers spend on coding tasks.

By providing tools to efficiently build and scale applications, Gadget allows developers to bypass repetitive and time-consuming aspects of their workflow. This ultimately fosters increased productivity.

The Genesis of Gadget

“Our motivation for creating Gadget stemmed from personal experience,” explained CEO Brundage in a recent interview with TechCrunch. “We encountered significant delays when attempting to launch various projects ourselves.”

“The extensive pre-launch preparation proved frustrating. Recognizing a common pain point among developers, we aimed to create a solution that would address this challenge.”

A Comprehensive Development Environment

Gadget consolidates essential resources for developers into a unified platform. This includes tools, libraries, APIs, and established best practices.

Developers can define their data models and write code while benefiting from advanced features. These features encompass built-in state machines, automated access control, instant API generation, and seamless integrations with other SaaS platforms.

Future Plans and Expansion

The recently acquired funding will be allocated towards the public launch of Gadget’s serverless stack. Furthermore, the company intends to expand its connectivity to third-party APIs, starting with Shopify.

Brundage and Hashemi will initially concentrate on the e-commerce sector, leveraging their prior experience and expertise gained while working at Shopify.

“These funds will be used to grow our team with exceptional talent and accelerate the delivery of new features,” Brundage stated.
