DJI Launches All-in-One FPV Drone System

DJI Enters the FPV Drone Market with the DJI FPV System
DJI previously explored First-Person View (FPV) technology with the release of the DJI Goggles in 2016. This initial foray represented a natural progression for the leading drone manufacturer, holding approximately 70% of the drone market share, and aimed to broaden the appeal of FPV flying beyond dedicated hobbyists.
Now, DJI is significantly advancing its position within this sector with the introduction of the DJI FPV. This newly launched drone model is specifically designed to provide a ready-to-use solution for individuals interested in experiencing flight through a head-mounted display.
A Unique Position in the Drone Landscape
The DJI FPV occupies a distinctive niche, both within DJI’s product line and the broader drone market. While traditionally, FPV drones have catered to experienced enthusiasts and racers, this new model targets beginner and intermediate users. It offers a largely plug-and-play experience.
However, unlike many racing drones, the DJI FPV prioritizes ease of use over extensive customization. Consequently, it lacks the modularity typically found in models designed for speed optimization.
Features Designed for Accessibility
To simplify the learning process, DJI has incorporated beginner modes and an optional motion controller. The drone leverages advancements in DJI’s imaging technology and controller design, building upon years of consumer hardware and software development.
A built-in flight simulator within the accompanying app allows users to practice flying virtually, minimizing the risk of damage to the hardware during initial learning stages.
The complete system, including the drone, second-generation FPV goggles, a controller, and a battery, is priced at $1,299. The motion controller is available separately for $199, and additional batteries can be purchased as part of a Fly More bundle.
DJI’s Vision for the FPV Experience
According to DJI’s European Creative Director, the new system provides a pathway into the FPV category. It offers a balance between the immersive experience of FPV flight and the reliability associated with DJI’s established drone technology.
This approach aims to provide a more accessible entry point for those curious about FPV, while still benefiting from the quality and support expected from a leading drone manufacturer.
Performance and Technical Specifications
While not strictly a racing drone, the DJI FPV is engineered to deliver a comparable flying experience. It can achieve speeds of up to 87 MPH, with acceleration from 0 to 62 MPH in just two seconds.
However, less experienced pilots are advised to gradually build their skills and become familiar with first-person view flying before attempting such speeds. Switching to Manual mode disables hovering and obstacle sensing, increasing the potential for collisions.
The goggles offer three distinct modes: Low-latency HD (1440 x 810p at 60 fps or increased field of view at 50 fps), Smooth mode (up to 120 fps), and Audience mode (connecting up to eight additional goggles). The on-board camera captures footage in 4K at 60fps with 120 Mbps, featuring a single-axis image stabilization system and up to 4x slow-motion capabilities.
The DJI FPV is currently available for purchase.
