Rivian and Samsung SDI Announce Battery Cell Supply Partnership
Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer supported by Amazon, has established a partnership with Samsung SDI to secure its supply of battery cells. This collaboration is crucial as Rivian prepares to launch its electric pickup truck later this year.
Details of the Agreement
While the financial terms and duration of the agreement were not revealed, Rivian confirmed that collaboration with Samsung SDI has been ongoing throughout the entire vehicle development phase.
Demanding Battery Requirements
Rivian’s forthcoming R1T pickup and R1S SUV, categorized as “adventure vehicles,” necessitate battery modules and packs capable of withstanding challenging environmental conditions and rigorous usage.
Samsung SDI's Existing Automotive Supply Chain
Samsung SDI is already a recognized supplier of battery cells to numerous automotive manufacturers. Notably, in 2019, the company secured a substantial $3.2 billion contract with the BMW Group, spanning a decade.
Statements from Rivian’s CEO
“The performance and dependability of Samsung SDI battery cells, when integrated with our energy-dense module and pack design, are highly promising,” stated RJ Scaringe, CEO of Rivian. “Samsung SDI’s commitment to innovation and ethical sourcing of battery materials resonates strongly with our core values.”
This partnership underscores Rivian’s dedication to securing a robust and sustainable battery supply chain as it enters the competitive EV market.
