Ray-Ban Smart Glasses: Facebook's Next Product Revealed

Facebook's Expansion Beyond Digital Advertising
While Facebook’s core revenue stream is currently driven by digital advertisements, the company maintains significant ambitions in the hardware sector, extending beyond virtual reality technologies.
During a recent earnings conference, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company’s forthcoming product launch will be a new line of smart glasses developed in collaboration with Ray-Ban.
Features and Development of the Smart Glasses
Zuckerberg described the glasses as possessing a distinctive and recognizable design, offering users a range of innovative functionalities.
He expressed enthusiasm about making the product available to consumers and furthering the company’s progress toward the development of fully functional augmented reality glasses.
Rumors regarding Facebook’s work on these sunglasses have circulated since 2019. Reports from CNBC indicated a partnership between Facebook and EssilorLuxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban, to create AR eyewear codenamed “Orion.”
These glasses were initially envisioned as a comprehensive replacement for smartphones, enabling users to make calls, access information, and even broadcast live video streams.
This concept drew parallels to Google Glass, another collaboration with Luxottica, rather than the smartphone-dependent Spectacles produced by Snap.
Hugo Barra, formerly VP of VR at Facebook Reality Labs, confirmed in the previous year that the glasses were slated for release in 2021, but updates have been limited since then.
The Metaverse and Facebook's Future
Zuckerberg emphasized that these glasses are crucial to Facebook’s long-term strategy.
Alongside virtual reality, augmented reality (AR) is a fundamental component in the creation of the “metaverse,” a concept central to Facebook’s future vision.
The company intends to evolve into a shared, interactive platform where users can seamlessly transition between various social experiences utilizing both VR and AR technologies.
The term “metaverse” has recently gained prominence within Silicon Valley and among futurists.
Although the concept has existed for over a decade, it has become increasingly popular following the success of multiplayer game creation platforms such as Fortnite and Roblox.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also referenced an “enterprise metaverse” during his company’s recent earnings call.
Investment and Affordability
For Facebook, the metaverse represents a significant opportunity, not merely a passing trend.
The company is investing substantial capital to construct this shared digital universe, which will be populated by Facebook users and supported by digital advertising, as stated by Zuckerberg.
To realize this vision, Facebook needs to increase the adoption of its computing hardware, and a key strategy is to make these devices more accessible through affordability.
Zuckerberg explained, “Our business model isn’t going to primarily be around trying to sell devices at a large premium… because our mission is around serving as many people as possible.”
He further stated the company’s commitment to affordability to maximize participation and expand the digital economy within the metaverse.
Other Hardware Projects
Beyond the smart glasses, Facebook is reportedly developing additional hardware products.
Reports suggest the company is working on a smartwatch featuring a built-in cellular connection and a detachable display.
While the smartwatch was initially expected to be released first, Zuckerberg appears to have prioritized the smart glasses.
