Firebolt Raises $37M to Disrupt Data Warehousing | TechCrunch

For numerous businesses, the move to cloud computing has unfolded as a transition to hybrid setups, where organizational data is equally likely to be stored across various cloud platforms as it is within on-site infrastructure, data warehouses, or data lakes. Today, a new company offering a more thorough method for evaluating, analyzing, and utilizing this data is announcing a funding round as it aims to compete with established players like Snowflake, Amazon, Google, and others in the enterprise data analytics sector.
Firebolt, which has re-engineered the data warehouse concept for improved efficiency and reduced costs, today announced it has secured $37 million in funding from Zeev Ventures, TLV Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners, and Angular Ventures. The company intends to utilize these funds to further develop its product and expand its customer base.
The company is officially “launching” today, but—consistent with many enterprise startups operating in stealth mode—it has already been operating for two years, developing its platform and securing commercial agreements. It currently serves approximately 12 large enterprise clients and is experiencing significant demand for its services, according to CEO Eldad Farkash in a recent interview.
The funding amount is substantial, particularly considering the company’s relatively recent emergence, but it is partly attributable to the founders’ proven experience. Farkash was a founding member of Sisense, a successful business intelligence startup, and has co-founded Firebolt alongside two other members of Sisense’s original team: Saar Bitner as COO and Ariel Yaroshevich as CTO.
During their time at Sisense, these three encountered a challenge: when working with terabytes of data, existing cloud data warehouses struggled to deliver adequate performance for analytics and related tools, and the only potential solution involved continually increasing cloud capacity.
Farkash, possessing significant technical expertise, decided to establish Firebolt to address this issue, which he characterized as a new, complex, and “important” problem. “My primary skill is building startups,” he remarked.
In his view, while data warehousing represented a significant advancement in managing the large volumes of data that companies now collect and seek to leverage, it is beginning to appear as an outdated approach.
“Data warehouses addressed the challenges of yesterday, namely, ‘How do I migrate to the cloud and manage scalability?’ ” he explained, referencing Google’s BigQuery, Amazon’s RedShift, and Snowflake as effective solutions to those concerns. “We position Firebolt as a new competitor in this space, offering a fresh perspective on design and technology. We shift the focus from scalability to speed and efficiency.”
The startup asserts that its performance is up to 182 times faster than that of conventional data warehouses. It is a SQL-based system that operates on principles derived from academic research that had not yet been implemented, focusing on more efficient data handling through innovative compression techniques and data parsing methods. Data lakes can also be integrated with a broader data ecosystem, resulting in reduced cloud capacity requirements.
This issue extends beyond Sisense. As enterprise data continues to grow at an exponential rate, cloud analytics is expanding in parallel, projected to reach a $65 billion market by 2025, according to Firebolt’s estimates.
However, Farkash noted that the Firebolt concept initially presented a challenge even to the engineers they recruited to build the business: it necessitated the construction of entirely new warehouses from the ground up to support the platform, with five currently in operation and plans for further expansion with this new funding.
It is also worth noting that its competitors are actively innovating. Just recently, Dataform was acquired by Google to enhance performance within BigQuery.
“Firebolt has developed a SaaS product that transforms the analytics experience for large datasets,” stated Oren Zeev of Zeev Ventures. “Innovation in the big data field has not kept pace with the surge in data growth, rendering most data warehousing solutions too slow, too costly, or too complex to scale. Firebolt elevates cloud data warehousing by providing the most powerful analytical engine available. This enables organizations to easily analyze multi-Terabyte/Petabyte datasets at significantly lower costs and deliver a truly interactive experience to their employees, customers, or anyone requiring data access.”
