GitHub and Fired Employee Reach Resolution

GitHub Resolves Dispute with Former Employee

An agreement has been reached between GitHub and the individual who was terminated following discussions related to the January attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to statements provided to TechCrunch.

Initial Incident and Termination

On the day of the Capitol breach by supporters of then-President Trump, a GitHub employee expressed concern for colleagues located in the Washington D.C. area.

A message posted in Slack, stating “stay safe homies, Nazis are about,” prompted a complaint from another employee who deemed the language inappropriate for the workplace.

Subsequently, the employee was dismissed, with a representative from Human Resources citing a “pattern of behavior” inconsistent with company policy as the reason for the termination.

Company Response and Leadership Change

GitHub’s Chief Operating Officer, Erica Brescia, later announced that the head of HR had accepted full accountability for the situation and resigned.

While the individual’s name was not initially disclosed, Carrie Olesen was widely identified as the former Chief Human Resources Officer at GitHub.

At the time, GitHub also indicated that the decision to terminate the employee had been reversed and discussions were underway with their representative.

Resolution Reached

Despite the initial reversal, the employee did not return to their position at GitHub.

The former employee confirmed that an “amicable resolution” was ultimately achieved with the company. He expressed appreciation for GitHub’s condemnation of white supremacy and its recognition of the threat it poses.

The specific details of the resolution were not disclosed, although the employee had previously indicated a desire for damages or other forms of reconciliation.
