Course Hero and Venture Capital: An Unlikely Path

Course Hero's Evolution and Recent Funding

Founded in 2006, the educational technology company Course Hero initially grew independently, avoiding early venture capital funding. The company operated for eight years before securing a $15 million Series A investment. Subsequently, it continued for almost another six years without additional venture capital, before completing two financing rounds in 2020.

Significant Series C Funding

Recently, Course Hero announced a new funding round: a $380 million Series C, resulting in a valuation of $3.6 billion. This financing was spearheaded by Wellington Management, with contributions from Sequoia Capital Global Equities, OMERS Growth Equity, D1 Capital Partners, and existing investors.

This represents a substantial 227.3% increase in Course Hero’s valuation within a little over a year. The company asserts it has maintained positive cash flow and profitability, based on adjusted EBITDA, for more than five years.

A Shift in Perspective on Capital

This latest raise contrasts with comments made by CEO and co-founder Andrew Grauer in 2020, regarding the “risks and rewards of securing capital.”

Grauer previously stated that raising funds prematurely could lead to misaligned expectations due to differing timeframes set by new shareholders. Course Hero’s current rapid capitalization suggests a change in perspective, indicating the startup believes it has moved beyond the stage of unfavorable investor incentives.

Expanding Beyond a Study Resource

Grauer envisions a broader role for the company, justifying the need for substantial capital. He believes Course Hero has transitioned from simply being a repository of over 80 million course-specific study resources and guides, to becoming a comprehensive platform.

The company intends to actively pursue a strategy of consolidation, evidenced by its acquisitions of Symbolab, LitCharts, CliffsNotes, and QuillBot.

Building a Learning Ecosystem

“We’re focused on developing a platform that supports the entire learning process, functioning as a productivity suite for education,” Grauer explained. “Each acquired business will maintain its individual products and brands, while we work to integrate them into a cohesive ecosystem, delivering increased value to both learners and educators.”

The newly acquired capital will primarily be allocated to funding further acquisitions within the edtech sector.

Growth Projections and Future Expansion

Grauer projects that Course Hero can increase its subscriber base from 2 million per year to 50 million per year by 2030. This growth will be driven by expanding its services beyond a traditional “study platform” for students and educators.

Students will continue to access Course Hero through its existing website, but will also have access to a wider range of products and brands.

Adapting to Evolving Educational Needs

“Over the past two years, we’ve observed a significant shift in online pedagogy, and the methods used to assess student understanding are evolving,” Grauer noted to TechCrunch. “These changes necessitate better, more affordable, and more effective resources, tools, and services to meet the needs of modern students and educators.”

Strategic Acquisitions and New Verticals

The co-founder detailed plans to utilize the new capital to acquire companies operating in new areas, including different subjects, grade levels, and geographic locations. “This will include a particular emphasis on technical skills and tool-based product solutions,” he added, highlighting the potential for continued growth.

Exploring Emerging Technologies

Grauer acknowledged that Course Hero has not yet “fully explored the potential of crypto and web3,” recognizing the need to simplify these concepts for a broader audience. As the company’s market expands, it will need to adapt to support a diverse range of learning requirements, extending beyond basic homework assistance and study guides.
