Ford F-150 Lightning: New Details Revealed - Electric Pickup Truck

Ford Announces the F-150 Lightning Name for its Electric Pickup

Ford officially announced on Monday the designation of its forthcoming all-electric pickup truck: the F-150 Lightning. This name pays homage to the SVT F-150, a performance variant from the 1990s.

Details on Powertrain and Capabilities

While specific details regarding the powertrain, range, and other technical specifications remain undisclosed, Ford’s President and CEO, Jim Farley, has shared additional information. The electric pickup is slated for release next year.

A key feature highlighted is the F-150 Lightning’s potential to provide power to a home during a power outage. Ford previously demonstrated this capability with its Hybrid F-150, enabling it to power job sites and tools. However, this marks the first instance of Ford stating a vehicle can function as a home backup generator.

Performance and Technology

The electric truck will also support over-the-air software updates, ensuring continuous improvement and feature enhancements. Furthermore, it is anticipated to surpass the performance of the original F-150 Lightning performance truck, which was equipped with a V8 engine and launched in 1993.

“Occasionally, a vehicle emerges that fundamentally alters the automotive landscape… the Model T, the Mustang, the Prius, the Model 3,” Farley stated. “Now, the F-150 Lightning arrives.”

He continued, “America’s most popular vehicle for nearly 50 years is transitioning to a digital and fully electric platform. The F-150 Lightning offers the ability to power homes during outages, boasts quicker acceleration than its predecessor, and will benefit from ongoing improvements via over-the-air updates.”

Production and Reveal

Production of the electric pickup is scheduled to commence next spring at the Ford Rouge Electric Vehicle Center.

The official unveiling of the Ford F-150 Lightning will be broadcast via livestream on May 19th from Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.

Part of a Larger Electrification Strategy

The Ford F-150 Lightning builds upon the launch of the all-electric Mustang Mach-E. The E-Transit, an all-electric cargo van designed for commercial applications, is also a component of Ford’s $22 billion investment in electrification initiatives.

This investment underscores Ford’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle portfolio.
