Ford to Go All-Electric in Europe by 2030 | Electric Vehicle News

Ford's Electrification Strategy for Europe
Ford has unveiled a new strategic direction for its operations within the European automotive market. The core of this plan centers around transitioning to a business model focused almost exclusively on electric vehicles (EVs) by the year 2030.
Investment in Cologne Factory
To facilitate this shift, Ford is committing $1 billion towards the modernization of its manufacturing facility located in Cologne, Germany. This investment will enable the production of EVs utilizing a platform developed by Volkswagen.
The first vehicle to roll off the assembly line following these upgrades is anticipated to arrive in 2023.
Phasing Out Gasoline Vehicles
Stuart Rowley, the president of Ford of Europe, formally announced this strategy during a recent online press conference.
The plan entails a gradual discontinuation of gasoline-powered vehicles, with a move towards full electrification. Ford anticipates that all of its commercially available vehicles in Europe will be electric by 2024.
By 2026, the company projects that its entire vehicle lineup will consist of either fully electric models or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
While Ford states that gasoline-powered commercial vehicles will remain available for purchase in Europe beyond 2030, the company currently forecasts that electric models will represent approximately two-thirds of its total European sales volume.
Industry Trend and Market Position
This announcement follows a comparable commitment from General Motors, which previously declared its intention to primarily manufacture EVs by 2035.
Both Ford and General Motors currently hold relatively small market shares in Europe. GM has significantly reduced its presence, while Ford’s current market share stands at approximately 5%.
Here's a summary of the key points:
- Ford aims for nearly 100% EV sales in Europe by 2030.
- $1 billion will be invested in the Cologne, Germany factory.
- The factory will utilize a Volkswagen EV platform.
- All Ford commercial vehicles in Europe will be electric by 2024.
