Ford Accelerates Mustang Mach-E Production

Ford intends to significantly ramp up the manufacturing volume of the all-electric Mustang Mach-E in the coming year. The objective is to triple the current production capacity by 2023, responding to exceptionally high consumer interest, as announced by CEO Jim Farley via Twitter on Friday.

First Official Production Outlook

This announcement marks the first instance of the automaker publicly detailing specific projections for the Mustang Mach-E’s output. Previously, Ford had only communicated broader goals for its overall electric vehicle production.

Expanded EV Capacity Goals

In November, Ford declared its ambition to elevate its global electric vehicle production capacity to 600,000 units by 2023. This increased capacity will encompass the Mustang Mach-E, the F-150 Lightning, and the E-Transit commercial vans.

Achieving the 600,000-unit target would represent a doubling of the company’s previously anticipated production figures for the next two years.

CEO Farley’s Statement

Mr. Farley’s tweet stated: “Meeting the incredible demand for the Mustang Mach-E is proving challenging, but we are committed to increasing output. Beginning in 2022, we will boost production, aiming for over 200,000 units annually for North America and Europe by 2023. This represents a threefold increase compared to our 2021 production levels.”

Production Location

Ford has confirmed to TechCrunch that the increase in Mustang Mach-E production capacity will be facilitated by expanding manufacturing operations at its facility in Cuautitlan, Mexico.

Production Adjustments for Other Models

The announcement regarding the Mach-E came on the same day that Automotive News reported a delay in the commencement of production for battery-electric versions of the Explorer and Lincoln Aviator crossovers. The production start has been postponed by approximately 18 months, as indicated in memos distributed to suppliers and reviewed by Automotive News.

These Explorer and Aviator EV models were originally slated for assembly at the Cuautitlan, Mexico plant.

Sales Performance and Targets

Ford had initially projected sales of around 50,000 Mustang Mach-E vehicles for the first year of production (model year 2021) in North America and Europe.

According to the company’s latest sales data, 15,602 Mach-Es were sold in Europe through the end of the third quarter, and 24,791 were sold in the U.S. through the end of November.

With a total of 40,393 vehicles sold to date, the company is on track to achieve its 50,000 sales goal.
