Gemini AI App Reaches 400 Million Users - Google's Success

Gemini AI App Reaches 400 Million Users
Google’s Gemini AI application has surpassed 400 million monthly active users, as announced by CEO Sundar Pichai during a press conference preceding Google I/O 2025.
This growth positions Google’s AI chatbot application as a competitor nearing the user base of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
User Base Comparison
Recent legal documents reveal that Google estimated ChatGPT’s monthly active users at approximately 600 million in March. At that time, Gemini had reached 350 million monthly active users.
The increasing popularity of ChatGPT poses a considerable challenge to Google’s core Search business.
Impact on Google Search
ChatGPT offers a novel and more engaging method for users to obtain information from the internet. Gemini represents Google’s primary attempt to directly compete with OpenAI in the evolving chatbot landscape, and initial results indicate success.
It appears the Gemini app is effectively attracting users away from ChatGPT.
Leadership Changes
Google has recently restructured the leadership team behind Gemini. Josh Woodward, previously leading the popular NotebookLM application, now oversees Gemini.
This change is part of a broader strategy to generate increased interest in Google’s AI chatbot.
AI Integration Across Google Products
The Gemini app is not the sole avenue through which Google delivers its AI capabilities to users.
Pichai also stated that Google’s AI overviews are now utilized by over 1.5 billion users monthly.
Furthermore, during Google I/O 2025, the company announced an expansion of AI mode to a wider user base, aiming to enhance Search with more conversational experiences driven by generative AI.
Competition in the AI Chatbot Space
While OpenAI and Google currently dominate the AI chatbot market, Meta is also striving to establish a presence.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently reported that Meta’s AI products collectively serve more than one billion monthly active users across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Meta has also launched its own AI chatbot application to rival ChatGPT and Gemini.
A Competitive Landscape
The AI chatbot market, once largely defined by ChatGPT, now features robust competition from major technology companies.
