Helaina Secures Funding for Human Milk-Equivalent Baby Formula

Helaina Secures $20 Million in Series A Funding for Innovative Infant Milk Production
Helaina, a pioneering company in the infant nutrition sector, has announced the successful completion of a $20 million Series A financing round. This investment will facilitate the company’s progression into manufacturing and the subsequent commercial launch of its groundbreaking initial product.
Company Origins and Core Technology
Founded in 2019 by food scientist and New York University instructor Laura Katz, Helaina is distinguished as “the first company dedicated to the production of functional human proteins for food applications.”
The company utilizes a precision fermentation technique, effectively reprogramming yeast cells to function as miniature production facilities. These cells are engineered to synthesize proteins nearly identical to those naturally found in human milk.
Addressing a Gap in Infant Nutrition
According to Katz, a significant opportunity existed to modernize infant feeding practices. She stated to TechCrunch, “While numerous industries were experiencing technological advancements, the field of infant nutrition had seen comparatively little progress.” She identified infants and their parents as the ideal demographic for nutritional and health improvements.
With the infant formula market projected to reach $103 billion by 2026, Helaina aims to alleviate the stigma surrounding infant feeding choices. The company intends to offer accessible, yet nutritionally supportive, food options for parents, alongside resources to aid informed decision-making.
Product Development and Health Benefits
Helaina has successfully created its first protein and is focused on replicating all the essential components of breast milk, sequentially. Beyond providing essential calories, the product is designed to bolster immunity against fungal, bacterial, and viral infections.
Investment Details and Investor Enthusiasm
This latest funding round was jointly led by Spark Capital and Siam Capital, with participation from Plum Alley Investments and Primary Venture Partners. This brings the company’s total funding to $24.6 million, including prior pre-seed and seed investments totaling $4.6 million raised in 2019 and 2020.
Katz highlighted the unexpected level of investor interest, noting a strong personal connection to the company’s mission. She added, “The potential to apply this technology to a product so deeply meaningful to people has been truly inspiring.”
Future Plans and Commercialization
The Series A funding will be allocated to scaling manufacturing capabilities, expanding the executive team, and finalizing go-to-market strategies. The company is actively pursuing approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Following approval, Helaina plans to integrate its proteins into a range of consumer products, establishing a new category focused on immunity alongside traditional nutrition.
Competitive Landscape
Helaina is not the sole innovator in advanced infant formula development. Companies like Bobbie, which secured $15 million in Series A funding for its European-style formula, and ByHeart are also pursuing advancements. Biomilq claims to have produced “the world’s first cell-cultured human milk outside of the breast.”
Differentiation and Unique Approach
Katz emphasizes that Helaina’s distinct approach to protein creation and its focus on demonstrable health outcomes set it apart from competitors. “Helaina is the first to introduce human proteins into food,” she stated. “This pioneering effort is creating a new category akin to consumer immunology.”
Siam Capital’s Investment Rationale
Sita Chantramonklasri, making one of her first investments from her new fund, Siam Capital, explained that the fund prioritizes businesses operating at the intersection of sustainability and consumer needs.
Chantramonklasri had been following Helaina’s progress for some time, initially learning about the company through Kevin Thau of Spark Capital. Her thorough investigation, including a visit to Helaina’s laboratory, confirmed her belief in the company’s science-driven approach.
Founder’s Vision and Long-Term Potential
Chantramonklasri praised Katz as a visionary founder, stating, “Laura is a fantastic founder and wise beyond her years.” She believes Helaina is well-positioned to advocate for mothers and families, and anticipates the market becoming increasingly competitive.
While acknowledging the emergence of other cell culture technologies, such as those employed by Biomilq, Chantramonklasri believes Helaina is poised to lead the field in terms of progress and innovation.
