holoride Launches Ride Crypto for In-Car Metaverse

Holoride Launches Ride Cryptocurrency for In-Vehicle VR Entertainment
Holoride, the startup supported by Audi, has initiated the public sale of its Ride cryptocurrency token. This token is central to the company’s vision of an immersive, in-vehicle virtual reality entertainment system designed for passengers.
Building an Extended Reality Ecosystem
The introduction of the Ride crypto represents a significant step for Holoride in developing its extended reality (XR) ecosystem. This ecosystem aims to foster a community of developers creating games and experiences. Passengers will utilize the Ride utility token to purchase access to these virtual worlds and games.
These experiences are uniquely synchronized with the motion of the vehicle, enhancing the sense of immersion.
Launch Timeline and Platform Development
Holoride intends to make its XR system available for private vehicles in the coming year. While specific details regarding vehicle brands and launch dates remain limited, the company had previously indicated a summer 2022 launch, but has since adjusted its timeline.
“We have developed a unique tech stack over the past few years, connecting car manufacturers and content creators with passengers,” explained Nils Wollny, CEO and co-founder of Holoride, to TechCrunch. “Integrating blockchain technology and launching our own Ride token is a natural progression to enhance our platform and ensure fair, transparent participation.”
Integration with Elrond Blockchain and NFTs
In May, Holoride announced the integration of Elrond’s blockchain technology into its platform. This integration will leverage Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) to incentivize developers to contribute content. NFTs will also allow passengers to personalize their in-car experiences.
Both the Ride token and the NFTs are built on the Elrond blockchain and will facilitate transactions within the Holoride ecosystem. The key difference is that NFTs are unique and non-interchangeable, while Ride functions as a standard currency.
NFTs and Token Exchange
“Users and content creators will be able to mint unique NFTs based on their experiences, exchanging them for Ride tokens,” Wollny stated. “These NFTs can then be bought and sold using Ride.”
The incorporation of blockchain, NFTs, and cryptocurrency is not merely a trend-following exercise. Holoride envisions extending reality beyond the car seat, bridging the gap between the physical and digital realms of the metaverse.
Ride Token Listing and Potential Growth
Although Ride is currently limited to purchases within the Holoride ecosystem, its potential is significant. Following its official listing on December 7th, Ride will initially be exchangeable with Elrond’s cryptocurrency, EGLD. EGLD can then be converted into other cryptocurrencies like USDC or traditional fiat currencies, potentially driving the growth of Ride.
The Metaverse and Self-Driving Industries
Numerous prominent companies, including Meta (formerly Facebook), Niantic, Amazon, Roblox, Unity Software, and Microsoft, are actively developing metaverse projects. Concurrently, the self-driving ride-hailing industry, with companies like Waymo, Cruise, Motional/Lyft, and WeRide, is progressing towards commercialization.
Wollny aspires for Holoride to become the “transportation company for the metaverse.” While initially focused on private vehicles, the long-term goal is integration with self-driving vehicles, providing entertainment for passengers during their journeys.
Partnerships and Technological Advancements
Earlier this month, Holoride announced a partnership with NEVS, a Swedish electric car manufacturer. This collaboration will integrate Holoride’s technology into NEVS’s PONS mobility system, a self-driving shared mobility concept featuring the Sango AV. The platform will also benefit from Terranet’s VoxelFlow technology, which utilizes vehicle sensors to accurately calculate the distance, direction, and speed of objects, ensuring a synchronized user experience.
Ride Token Sale Details
The Ride token sale is being conducted on Elrond’s Maiar Launchpad. Initially, 130 million tokens will be in circulation, with a maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. A private sale of 200 million tokens at $0.02 per token has already concluded, and an additional 50 million tokens were sold publicly prior to the official launch, raising a total of $6 million.
Allocation of Proceeds and Token Distribution
The Holoride team intends to allocate the proceeds from the Ride token sale primarily to content creation, with additional funds dedicated to development, marketing, and security audits. 25% of the tokens will be distributed throughout the XR ecosystem, supporting partners, developers, and growth initiatives.
“This includes developers, content creators, automotive manufacturers, mobility providers, operational supporters, advisors, and ambassadors,” Wollny clarified.
An additional 20% of the tokens will be allocated to the “community,” rewarding early contributors, beta testers, and those involved in technical audits and code reviews. Only 5% is designated for the “public sale,” while the remaining tokens will be distributed to strategic investors, equity holders, Holoride’s treasury, and the Holoride team.
Token Utility and Future Applications
Beyond purchasing experiences, Ride token holders will gain access to ecosystem governance and community benefits, such as subscriptions, upgrades, and exclusive events. The tokens will also incentivize a “ride to play to earn” model, rewarding users for sustainable transportation choices and data sharing.
Content creators and car manufacturers may also receive Ride tokens as partner royalties.
Looking Ahead
While Holoride is approaching its launch, achieving significant scale will be crucial for realizing the full potential of its ecosystem. However, it could serve as a valuable model for how the metaverse will leverage blockchain technology, emphasizing transparency, security, interoperability, and user participation.
Wollny remains optimistic about Holoride’s potential to play a central role in shaping the future of the metaverse. “Now that there’s increased interest in the metaverse, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs, the pieces might fit together more seamlessly,” he said. “However, many challenges remain, and the best is yet to come.”
This article has been updated to reflect new information from Holoride on when its crypto will be exchangeable with other currencies.
