Infinite Canvas Raises $2.8M for Metaverse Creator Group

The Rise of the Metaverse and the Need for Creator Support

As the concept of a fully realized, interconnected virtual world gains traction and user-generated gaming content experiences significant growth, Infinite Canvas aims to leverage insights from the esports industry to benefit the metaverse.

Understanding the Metaverse Landscape

The term “metaverse” is currently widespread, yet its definition remains fluid. While interpretations vary, it generally refers to the evolving network of virtual environments, populated by personalized avatars, interactive games, and digital assets, that are increasingly influencing our lives.

Similar to esports, which features prominent players with dedicated fan bases, the social gaming sphere boasts its own influential creators of original in-game content. However, these creators, primarily working independently on platforms like Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft, often lack the robust infrastructure that facilitated the rapid professionalization of esports.

Addressing the Challenges Faced by Metaverse Creators

Like early esports competitors, many content creators are young and may lack the resources necessary to effectively scale their burgeoning digital brands. This presents a significant opportunity for support and development.

Infinite Canvas: Empowering Metaverse Talent

Founded by Tal Shachar and Sebastian Park, Infinite Canvas is designed to connect content creators within popular online games with the financial backing, tools, and expertise needed to expand their businesses beyond self-reliance.

The Founders' Expertise

Shachar, formerly the growth strategist at BuzzFeed Studios and chief digital officer at Immortals Gaming Club, brings a wealth of experience in digital growth. Park, previously VP of Esports for the Houston Rockets and founder of the League of Legends franchise team Clutch Gaming, offers deep insight into the esports ecosystem.

The pair envision Infinite Canvas as a hybrid talent management agency and game publisher, mirroring the successful models observed in esports. They describe the venture as “an esports team for the metaverse.”

Securing Seed Funding

To facilitate this vision, Infinite Canvas has secured $2.8 million in pre-seed funding, led by Lightshed Venture Partners, founded by media analyst Richard Greenfield. Additional investors include BITKRAFT Ventures, Day One Ventures, Crossbeam, and Emerson Collective.

Greenfield emphasized the immense potential of the metaverse market, stating that Infinite Canvas is pioneering a network to connect creators, players, and content partners, ultimately increasing the earning potential of talent building virtual worlds.

Initial Partnerships and Creator Network

Infinite Canvas has already established partnerships with prominent Roblox creators, including RussoPlays, DeeterPlays, Sabrina, and DJ Monopoli from Terabrite Games. They’ve also collaborated with Fortnite map makers and streamers, collectively reaching an audience exceeding 4.5 million subscribers.

Drawing Parallels to Early Creator Platforms

The team recognizes the parallels between the current state of user-generated gaming content and the early days of platforms like YouTube.

Shachar noted that platforms like Roblox and other UGC gaming environments have lowered barriers to entry for content creation, enabling a new generation of creators to distribute their work without the previous constraints of distribution, skill sets, and capital.

Discovering a Community of Talented Creators

Shachar and Park immersed themselves in the creator community, discovering a diverse group of largely self-taught individuals crafting custom in-game content for Fortnite, Roblox, and Minecraft. This content provided valuable social connection during the pandemic, as interest in online spaces surged.

Park described encountering passionate and talented young creators from around the globe, dedicated to building innovative experiences.

Identifying a Gap in Support

Through these interactions, they identified a critical need for support structures to help creators elevate their work. The ecosystem felt fragmented, with content creators, game developers, and players operating in relative isolation.

Shachar highlighted the strong connection between content creation, gameplay, and further content creation, suggesting a need for a more integrated approach.

Infinite Canvas's Comprehensive Support System

Infinite Canvas aims to bridge this gap by providing creators with a comprehensive framework, encompassing marketing support, financial resources, and technological tools. As monetization options within virtual worlds evolve, the company intends to facilitate advertising and brand partnerships, empowering creators to expand their brands across multiple platforms.

Shachar posed the question: “What if we built a new kind of organization that blended parts of being a game publisher, parts of being an esports team, parts of being a capital and tech backend to basically enable these people to do what they do but better and bigger?”

Ultimately, Infinite Canvas believes that the realization of the metaverse hinges on the contributions of independent creators, and they are committed to unlocking the potential of this immense talent pool.
