Navigating U.S. Immigration with AI: JustiGuide's Approach

The United States immigration system is often described as intricate, challenging to understand, and financially burdensome for those seeking to immigrate. The company JustiGuide proposes a solution through an AI-powered portal designed to simplify the process.

Streamlining the Immigration Journey

JustiGuide aims to assist immigrants currently within the U.S., with plans for expansion to other nations, by clarifying legal complexities and identifying potential visa eligibility. Furthermore, the platform facilitates connections with immigration attorneys, with the goal of making the entire experience more affordable and efficient.

“Increased technological accessibility will empower individuals to independently complete forms and grasp their available options,” stated JustiGuide founder Bisi Obateru in an interview with TechCrunch. “This will allow them to utilize legal counsel primarily for review purposes.”

The Founder's Personal Experience

Mr. Obateru, originally from Nigeria, drew inspiration from his own experiences navigating the U.S. immigration system following the completion of his studies. He successfully obtained an H1-B visa – a common pathway for technology professionals – and subsequently secured permanent residency.

This personal journey motivated him to establish JustiGuide, intending to provide support to other immigrants. He explained that the platform enables immigrants to receive information and understand their immigration pathways in their preferred language.

Recognition and Target Audience

JustiGuide was recognized as the winner of the best pitch in the Policy + Protection category at TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference this year.

The company’s clientele includes startup founders requiring assistance with immigrant hiring, individuals holding H1-B visas exploring alternative options, international students considering entrepreneurship, and legal professionals and firms. Mr. Obateru also envisions potential licensing opportunities for government institutions in the future.

Platform Features and Functionality

The platform incorporates an AI legal research assistant, a matching system connecting lawyers and immigrants, and tools designed to expedite form completion. A key feature is a service that assists lawyers in compiling documents and streamlining tasks traditionally handled by paralegals.

According to Obateru, the platform currently serves 47,000 users and is powered by an AI model named Dolores. Dolores is described as a “continuous refining domain-specific AI” specifically trained to understand U.S. immigration law and provides translations into 12 different languages.

AI Training and Data Sources

Dolores was trained on a dataset of over 40,000 court cases sourced from the Free Law Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free access to legal materials. JustiGuide is also pursuing registration as a law firm to enable direct connections between users and its own immigration attorneys.

Proactive Assistance and Privacy Measures

Initially, JustiGuide utilized Dolores to proactively identify individuals seeking immigration assistance by scanning platforms like Reddit, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn based on relevant keywords, and then offering support via direct messaging.

To ensure user privacy, JustiGuide’s platform employs on-premise storage and encryption. Information is only exchanged when an immigrant connects with a lawyer, and certain user data is anonymized.
