Kerry Washington Invests in Jewelry Brand Aurate | Fashion News

Renowned actress Kerry Washington has invested an unspecified amount in the direct-to-consumer jewelry company, Aurate.

This investment isn't Washington's initial foray into the startup world – she has previously supported ventures like The Wing, Community, and Byte. She even alluded to a forthcoming deal during an appearance at Disrupt in September, describing it as a particularly exciting opportunity.

When asked about those earlier remarks this week, Washington responded with a laugh, confirming that Aurate was indeed the venture she had in mind. Beyond her financial contribution, Washington also partnered with the company to design The Lioness Collection. This line features two of Aurate’s popular gold chains, offered as both a necklace and bracelet, alongside hoop earrings and a pendant drawing inspiration from the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet.

Washington expressed enthusiasm for Aurate’s commitment to sustainability – specifically, its use of ethically sourced gold – and its mission to make fine jewelry more accessible. She also highlighted her preference for “working with female founders,” noting that she, along with Aurate’s founders Sophie Kahn and Bouchra Ezzahraoui, have formed “our own lioness tribe.”

“I drew inspiration from the symbolism of the lioness, considering how they interact, how they collaborate on hunts, and how they collectively care for their young,” she explained. “Lionesses don’t adhere to a strict hierarchy… They are both powerful and driven, yet deeply supportive of one another.”

Kahn described “numerous conversations over Zoom” with Washington during the collection’s development, while Ezzahraoui mentioned that discussions with the actress spanned the past three years – a period needed to ensure complete “philosophical alignment” and establish a suitable partnership.

“Aurate embodies both style and integrity, qualities that Kerry also possesses,” Kahn stated. “She is a dedicated activist with a strong voice and genuine concern. This makes her an ideal partner.”

Notably, Aurate’s business has continued to thrive throughout the pandemic, and the company is currently operating at a profit. Despite maintaining a few physical stores in New York City, the vast majority – 95% – of its sales are generated online.

Despite current social distancing measures, Aurate has found success because its jewelry is more affordable than many traditional fine jewelry options, while still offering high quality and durability. Furthermore, it’s a visible fashion accessory during video calls.

“I’ve discovered that accessorizing with jewelry has become even more meaningful when only the upper body is visible during a Zoom meeting,” Washington shared. “It’s proven more adaptable than many other fashion choices. High-heeled shoes, for example, are less practical.”
