Klarna CEO Credits AI for Hiring Freeze Despite Open Roles

Klarna's Workforce and the Impact of AI

Sebastian Siemiatkowski, the CEO of Klarna, recently stated in an interview with Bloomberg TV that his organization effectively ceased recruitment approximately one year ago. He attributes this substantial reduction in personnel to the capabilities of generative AI.

Despite Siemiatkowski’s optimistic outlook regarding AI, Klarna isn’t solely dependent on artificial intelligence to fill positions vacated by departing employees. Evidence, including current job advertisements and official company statements, indicates ongoing recruitment of human workers.

Workforce Reduction Through Attrition

“Our hiring practices were paused around a year ago,” Siemiatkowski explained to Bloomberg TV. “We began with a team of 4,500 and have since decreased to 3,500.”

He further clarified that this downsizing is primarily due to natural employee turnover. “Like all technology companies, we experience attrition; employees typically remain for around five years, resulting in a 20% annual departure rate. By refraining from hiring, we are simply allowing the workforce to contract.”

AI's Potential for Job Replacement

The CEO also expressed his belief in AI’s capacity to replicate human labor. “I maintain that AI is currently capable of performing all tasks undertaken by humans,” Siemiatkowski asserted.

He added that the efficiency gains provided by AI will be channeled into increased employee compensation. “We intend to distribute some of the improvements resulting from AI’s efficiency by accelerating the rate of salary increases for our staff.”

Previous Statements and Demonstrations

Siemiatkowski has consistently made similar pronouncements. At the beginning of 2024, he claimed that ChatGPT was handling the workload equivalent to 700 employees.

He also announced Klarna’s decision to replace Salesforce as its CRM provider with an AI-powered alternative, a move met with skepticism from Marc Benioff. Recently, the CEO even utilized an AI deepfake of himself to present the company’s financial results, aiming to demonstrate the potential for AI to replace even executive roles.

Current Hiring Practices

However, despite the significant workforce reduction over the past year, Klarna has not entirely halted recruitment efforts.

According to its website’s job postings page, Klarna is presently seeking to fill over 50 positions globally. Furthermore, Klarna managers have indicated, through LinkedIn posts observed by TechCrunch, that they are actively recruiting or expanding their teams on at least six occasions throughout 2024.

LinkedIn posts from newly hired Klarna employees also confirm the addition of personnel to the policy, software engineering, and global partnerships divisions within the last year.

Clarification from Klarna's Press Lead

John Craske, Klarna’s global press lead, explained to TechCrunch that Siemiatkowski’s comments regarding hiring are generally accurate but were “simplified for brevity during a broadcast interview.”

“Historically, from 2019 to 2022, we were hiring between one thousand and one and a half thousand people annually,” Craske stated in an email. “Currently, we are not actively recruiting to expand the workforce, but only backfilling essential roles, primarily in engineering.”

This suggests that complete job replacement via AI is not yet a reality.

Context and Broader Trends

While AI may be enabling Klarna to accomplish more with fewer personnel, it’s important to note that the company’s current employee count is comparable to its levels in 2021.

Like many tech companies, Klarna experienced significant hiring during the pandemic. Numerous organizations, including Meta and Amazon, have subsequently reduced their workforces through hiring freezes or layoffs.

Potential Motivations

It is also relevant that Klarna is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO). Siemiatkowski may be attempting to reassure investors that the company is proactively integrating generative AI into its operations and that the benefits are already becoming apparent.

However, for the majority of companies, the adoption and implementation of AI are progressing at a more measured pace.
