The Resurgence of Audio Meetings: Spot Meetings Secures $5 Million Seed Funding

Trees and outdoor environments have historically served as catalysts for innovation. Many company founders have reportedly conceived their ventures while walking in natural settings, such as Silicon Valley foothills or San Francisco parks.

However, the shift to remote work over the past year has largely diminished movement from our daily routines.

Spot Meetings Aims to Reimagine the Meeting Experience

Chicago-based Spot Meetings is focused on revitalizing the way we conduct meetings, with the ambition of becoming a leading alternative to platforms like Zoom.

The company, still in its early stages and currently operating in closed beta, recently announced a $5 million seed funding round. This investment was spearheaded by Ilya Fushman at Kleiner Perkins, following a $1.9 million pre-seed round led by Chapter One earlier in the year.

Building for Audio-First Collaboration

CEO and co-founder Greg Caplan emphasizes the need to rebuild the meeting experience specifically for audio-only environments.

“On mobile, simplicity and ease of understanding are paramount for users to effectively utilize the platform while on the go,” he explains. This necessitates comprehensive product development across multiple layers.

Introducing Spot: The Intelligent Meeting Assistant

A key feature of Spot Meetings is its integrated assistant, aptly named Spot.

Spot actively listens to the conversation and responds to voice commands from participants.

For example, issuing the command “Spot Fetch” retrieves the preceding 40 seconds of dialogue, transcribes it, and saves it as a note within the meeting for future reference.

This eliminates the need for manual note-taking or to-do list creation, a common inconvenience with existing meeting tools. As Caplan notes, “You don’t even need to take your phone out.”

Enhanced Collaboration Features

The platform incorporates a collaborative text-based scratchpad, accessible to all meeting participants.

Users can seamlessly copy and paste relevant snippets into this shared space.

All notes and information captured by Spot are saved within dedicated workspaces for later access.

Spot also automatically distributes follow-up emails to participants, summarizing key takeaways from the notes.

Furthermore, when the same participants reconvene for another audio meeting, Spot proactively retrieves notes from their previous interactions, establishing a continuous timeline of discussions.

While transcription is a standard feature, Spot Meetings differentiates itself by focusing on delivering concise, relevant transcripts.

The platform encourages users to select specific portions of the conversation that warrant follow-up, rather than providing a complete transcript that may go unread.

This deliberate approach ensures that users receive only the most pertinent information.

The Future of Digital Collaboration

“Collaboration from now and the future is going to be primarily digital … in-person is forever going to be the exception and not the rule,” Caplan asserts.

The company plans to expand the product’s capabilities with additional voice commands and further refine the audio-only experience.

Audio is believed to enhance focus during conversations, addressing the growing issue of video fatigue experienced by many remote workers.

To this end, Spot Meetings is developing smarter muting features that automatically suppress background noise when a participant is not speaking.

From Remote Year to Spot Meetings

Prior to Spot Meetings, Greg Caplan served as the CEO and co-founder of Remote Year, a company that facilitated working trips abroad for employees.

He initially gained recognition for Remote Year in 2015, and the company secured substantial venture funding before facing challenges during the pandemic, resulting in a 50% workforce reduction.

Caplan stepped down as CEO in April of last year, and Remote Year was subsequently acquired by Selina, a co-working space provider for travelers, in October.

A Team Built on Shared Experience

Hans Petter “HP” Eikemo, Spot Meetings’ co-founder and head of product and engineering, brings two decades of software engineering experience to the team.

Caplan and Eikemo first connected during the inaugural Remote Year cohort.

“He was literally the first person I called,” Caplan recalls.

The team is poised to expand with the new funding, and the company anticipates opening its beta program to its 6,000-member waitlist within the next 3-4 weeks.
