LG Acquires Cybellum for $240M - Automotive Cybersecurity Deal

LG Electronics Acquires Cybellum to Enhance Automotive Cybersecurity

LG Electronics, a prominent Korean technology company formerly recognized for its mobile phone division, is strategically shifting its focus towards the burgeoning field of next-generation automotive technologies. The company has announced the acquisition of Cybellum, an Israeli firm specializing in automotive cybersecurity.

Deal Structure and Financial Details

The acquisition will occur in stages. Initially, LG will secure a 64% stake in Cybellum for $140 million.

An additional $20 million will be invested through a Simple Agreement for Future Equity (SAFE) note, contingent upon the completion of the transaction in the fourth quarter.

The remaining shares will be purchased in the “near future,” with the final valuation and investment amount to be determined at that time.

Based on current valuations, the total deal is projected to be worth approximately $240 million, though market fluctuations could influence this figure.

Strategic Implications for LG

LG has actively invested in promising automotive startups, but this marks its first acquisition within Israel. This demonstrates the company’s expanding interest in both automotive hardware and the provision of software solutions to the industry.

Dr. Kim Jin-yong, president of LG Electronics Vehicle component Solutions Company, emphasized the critical role of software and the consequent need for robust cybersecurity in the automotive sector.

He stated that this acquisition will bolster LG’s cybersecurity capabilities, preparing it for the era of connected vehicles.

Benefits for Cybellum Investors

This acquisition represents a substantial return for Cybellum’s existing investors, including Blumberg Capital, Target Global, and RSBG Ventures.

Prior to this deal, Cybellum had successfully raised over $14 million in funding.

Cybellum’s Background and Clientele

Founded in 2016 by Slava Bronfman and Michael Engstler, both cybersecurity experts with backgrounds in the Israeli Defense Forces, Cybellum has established a strong customer base.

Notable clients include Jaguar Land Rover and Nissan, with partnerships extending to Harman, Toyota Tsusho, and PTC.

Bronfman confirmed that Cybellum will continue to collaborate with its current partners and operate as an independent entity for the time being.

The Growing Importance of Automotive Cybersecurity

The acquisition highlights the increasing significance of cybersecurity in the context of connected vehicles.

Connected cars present a complex new attack surface for malicious actors, given the multitude of components and the involvement of numerous manufacturers.

This complexity will only intensify as vehicles become more intelligent, connected, and ultimately autonomous, increasing reliance on secure systems.

Cybellum’s “Digital Twin” Approach

A key aspect of Cybellum’s technology is its use of a “digital twin” – a virtual replica of the vehicle’s systems.

This approach, also utilized in IT and healthcare, allows for comprehensive monitoring and threat assessment.

It helps bridge the fragmentation inherent in complex automotive systems, enabling real-time monitoring without impacting vehicle performance.

Future Outlook

Bronfman underscored that this acquisition is fundamentally a security investment, recognizing Cybellum’s expertise in cybersecurity.

He noted that LG’s prioritization of cybersecurity reflects its understanding of its essential role in the evolution of connected and autonomous vehicles.

Initial integrations between LG and Cybellum are anticipated to commence in 2022.
