Mealco Secures $7M Funding for Delivery-Centric Restaurants

Mealco, a company focused on assisting chefs in establishing delivery-focused restaurants, has announced the completion of a $7 million seed funding round.

The challenges and financial risks associated with opening a traditional restaurant are well-known, and the recent pandemic has unfortunately led to the closure of many establishments.

According to founder and CEO Daniel Simon, who previously held roles as a developer and product lead at Applicaster and collaborated with Tel Aviv restaurant group R2M, starting a restaurant typically requires a substantial investment – often between $1 and $2 million. He notes that a significant portion of initial effort, around 98%, is directed towards operational aspects rather than the culinary experience or customer engagement.

Mealco offers a different approach, eliminating the need for chefs to secure leases or incur significant upfront costs. This allows them to concentrate on menu development and dish creation. The company handles local ingredient sourcing, food preparation within its own kitchen facilities, and delivery through popular platforms like Uber Eats, DoorDash, Postmates, and Seamless.

Simon explains that Mealco streamlines the restaurant launch process, reducing it to just six to eight weeks. He emphasizes that chefs can avoid routine kitchen tasks, as Mealco’s software provides detailed instructions to kitchen staff for preparing each menu item.

Chefs also gain access to a data dashboard offering real-time insights into menu performance and customer feedback, enabling swift adjustments. Simon states that chefs can effectively “manage their restaurant from a mobile device.”

The company has already launched two restaurants serving Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens: Tributo, a Mexican restaurant, and Cayenne, specializing in Nashville hot chicken (led by chef Hillary Sterling). Currently, a waitlist of 50 chefs are seeking to partner with Mealco.

Regarding concerns about chefs being distanced from the food preparation and the traditional dining atmosphere, Simon indicates that it varies based on individual preferences.

He clarifies that Mealco is not suited for chefs who desire to be directly involved in daily kitchen operations. However, he believes that most chefs are fundamentally creators and artists who express their passion through their cuisine. Mealco, in his opinion, empowers them to prioritize this creative aspect.

Rucker Park Capital spearheaded the funding round, with participation from FJLabs, Reshape, 2048.vc, Oceans Ventures, Wilshire Lane Partners, and angel investors including Jonathan Zabusky, former CEO of Seamless. Mealco intends to expand throughout New York City and its surrounding areas this year, followed by expansion into new cities next year.

Wes Tang-Wymer, general partner at Rucker Park Capital, stated, “We’ve observed the evolution of the food industry closely in recent years. The current environment is ideal for embracing new technologies to launch brands in innovative formats. Mealco presents the most promising model for advancing restaurant innovation, enabling chefs to bring their concepts to life more quickly and affordably.”
