Lovejack: Find Love in 5 Words - Dating App

A New Approach to Online Dating: Introducing LoveJack
As Kevin Malone famously quipped, brevity is key. For Julia LeStage and Lisa Le, the minds behind the innovative dating app LoveJack, the process of finding companionship online shouldn’t resemble completing extensive forms.
How LoveJack Works: Five Words to Connection
LoveJack profiles share similarities with other blind-dating applications, yet incorporate a unique element. Instead of obscured or hidden profiles, potential matches present five words they’ve personally selected.
Users reveal profile pictures by pressing and holding on their phone screens – the app intentionally avoids traditional swiping gestures.
The Power of Conciseness
These five words can encompass anything: personality traits, humorous anecdotes, current emotions, or even seemingly random details. One beta tester amusingly demonstrated this by listing lunch ingredients during our evaluation.
The five-word limit fosters creativity and encourages users to be both succinct and imaginative. This aims to spark more engaging conversations, moving beyond commonplace inquiries or tired pick-up lines.
A Reaction to Existing Dating Platforms
LeStage and Le developed LoveJack after experiencing frustration with the often-inflated nature of online dating profiles. They felt many resembled professional resumes, complete with carefully curated images and bios.
“This isn’t LinkedIn. Where has the enjoyment disappeared?” LeStage questioned in an interview with TechCrunch, echoing a common sentiment among online daters. This dissatisfaction may contribute to recent difficulties faced by established dating services like Tinder.
Inspiration from Unexpected Sources
LeStage conceived the idea while serving as a judge for the Webby Awards, where winners are restricted to five-word acceptance speeches. The app also draws inspiration from the widespread popularity of The New York Times’ Wordle game.
She recounted that re-entering the dating world felt devoid of fun, noting that existing platforms prioritize superficial assessments based on appearance. She experimented with the five-word challenge on dates, discovering that people tended to choose words that revealed their thought processes.
The Stories Behind the Words
“The narratives connected to the words are what truly matter,” LeStage clarified. She cited an example of a date who mentioned “disco,” leading to a discussion about the history of the genre. “I thought, ‘Well, aren’t you fascinating?’” she added.
Unique Features: Bet On, Hold, and Daily Updates
LoveJack offers distinctive features like the ability to “Bet On” or “Hold” a match. “Betting” functions similarly to a like, but requires users to submit a five-word opening message.
Users are limited to a maximum of five matches daily, encouraging thoughtful selection. The “Hold” feature allows users to save profiles they’re unsure about.
Furthermore, the five-word descriptions can be refreshed daily, introducing a social element. LoveJack maintains an archive of all previous entries, allowing users to review their evolving self-expression.
“You can observe, in real-time, how they’re presenting themselves through their daily updates… Your narrative will shift each day, mirroring your mood and the current conditions,” LeStage explained.
Premium Features and Minimizing Ghosting
A future premium subscription will include an “All In” button – a “Super Like” equivalent – dedicating all five bets to a single person, preventing further matches for the day.
To discourage ghosting, LoveJack requires users to compose a pre-written message when setting up their profiles. This message is automatically sent to anyone they unmatch.
Privacy and Safety Measures
LoveJack encourages the use of pseudonyms to protect user identities. While common on dating apps, this practice can raise concerns about authenticity. However, the app implements selfie verification to confirm user identities.
Additional safety features include reporting and blocking options, censorship of inappropriate language and images, and an emergency function connecting users to police and safety hotlines. (These features were not available during beta testing but are planned for the official release.)
Launch Plans and Availability
The iOS app is scheduled to launch next month, beginning in London. Expansion to U.S. cities like Boston, New York, and San Francisco is planned. An Android version will be released in India later this summer.
