Microsoft's Nvidia Hopper Chip Purchase: 500K Units in 2024

Microsoft's Significant Investment in Nvidia Hopper Chips
This year, Microsoft’s acquisition of Nvidia Hopper chips has surpassed that of its primary competitors by a considerable margin.
Data reported by the Financial Times, sourced from tech consultancy Omdia, indicates that the technology leader procured 485,000 Nvidia Hopper chips throughout 2024.
Comparison with Competitors
For context, Meta’s purchases of the same Nvidia Hopper flagship chip totaled 224,000 units during the same period.
The volume of chips acquired by Microsoft in 2024 represents an increase of over three times the amount purchased in 2023.
Internal AI Chip Development
Alongside its external sourcing, Microsoft is actively developing its own proprietary AI chips, known as Maia.
These were initially unveiled during the company’s Ignite conference in late 2023.
Broader AI Initiatives
Microsoft has demonstrated a substantial commitment to artificial intelligence throughout the year.
The company has strengthened its collaboration with OpenAI and contributed to the organization’s substantial $6.6 billion funding round in October.
Sustainable Energy Investments
Further illustrating this dedication, Microsoft entered into an agreement in September to facilitate the reopening of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant.
This deal ensures the purchase of all energy generated by the plant over a 20-year period, specifically to power its growing network of data centers.
