NEAR Acquires Teemo: Expanding Data Business into Europe

A significant development in the data sector has occurred, as Near has announced the acquisition of the French company, Teemo.
Anil Mathews, founder and CEO of Near, explained to me that his organization handles data concerning the digital and physical activities of 1.6 billion individuals monthly. He stated: “We integrate these two realms to bridge existing informational divides.”
Teemo operates as a location intelligence firm with its base in Paris. Mathews indicated that Near, headquartered in Singapore, has been pursuing an expansion strategy moving “from east to west,” and the acquisition of Teemo will establish a strong foothold for growth across Europe – specifically, by providing direct engagement with the many major corporations based in Paris.
Mathews emphasized that Near has prioritized data privacy “since its inception,” and also highlighted Teemo’s distinct strengths in this domain, particularly concerning Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation.
“Teemo is deeply committed to privacy,” he noted. “They were the first organization to receive certification from the French Data Protection Officer confirming GDPR compliance.” (This certification followed an initial instance of being cautioned under GDPR regulations.)
Benoit Grouchko, Teemo’s founder and CEO, will assume the role of Near’s chief privacy officer, and the entire Teemo team will integrate into Near, according to Mathews. A further key benefit is that this acquisition will provide Near with access to Teemo’s GDPR-compliant consumer data, which will remain stored within European data centers and managed with continued full GDPR adherence.
Mathews also suggested that Near may pursue further expansion into other regions through comparable acquisitions in the future.
The specifics of the financial agreement for the acquisition have not been revealed. Previously operating as Databerries, Teemo had secured a total of $17.9 million in funding from investors including Index Ventures and Mosaic Ventures.
“We are thrilled to become part of the Near organization, with whom we share a similar foundation of technological innovation and high performance,” Grouchko stated. “This union will empower us to become more robust and accelerate our growth beyond the French market.”
