Nintendo Switch 2: Official Reveal & Everything We Know

Introducing the Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has released initial visuals of the Nintendo Switch 2 through a YouTube video. This new console, the successor to the highly successful Switch, will be marketed simply as the Switch 2.

Maintaining the core design principles of its predecessor, the Switch 2 will feature a modular form factor, allowing for versatile gameplay experiences.

Key Design Changes and Features

The video immediately highlights a key distinction from the original Switch: the Switch 2 boasts a larger console size and a more expansive display.

A noticeable bezel still surrounds the screen, providing a defined border.

Enhanced Joy-Con Controllers

The Joy-Con controllers are undergoing a substantial redesign. Their increased size accommodates the larger screen, and they now exhibit a more rounded aesthetic.

These controllers will connect to the tablet portion of the console magnetically, offering a secure and convenient attachment method.

A Refined Aesthetic

Nintendo appears to be adopting a more subdued color scheme for the Switch 2.

The console is predominantly black, accented by subtle color details beneath the controller sticks and on the upper portion of the Joy-Cons.

Docking and Play Options

The console remains dockable, enabling gameplay on a television screen.

When docked, the controllers can be utilized individually or connected to a separate controller grip for a traditional gaming experience.

Improved Kickstand and Port Placement

The kickstand on the rear of the device has been completely redesigned.

It now appears significantly more robust and stable than the kickstand found on the original Switch.

A new USB-C port is positioned at the top of the device, offering improved accessibility for charging while playing in handheld mode.

Backward Compatibility

Existing Nintendo Switch game owners will be pleased to learn that the Switch 2 will maintain compatibility with original Switch games.

A physical cartridge slot will be included at the top of the device, and digital games originally designed for the Switch will also function on the new console.

Featured Gameplay

The video showcases gameplay footage from a Mario Kart title.

While visually similar to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it remains uncertain whether this is the existing game or a brand-new installment in the series.

Internal Upgrades

The most significant improvements are anticipated to be internal.

Nintendo is expected to upgrade the console’s components to support more graphically demanding games, though specific details are currently unavailable.

Release Details

Information regarding pricing and availability remains limited at this time.

Nintendo plans to reveal further details during a Nintendo Direct livestream scheduled for April 2, 2025, indicating a release date still several months away.
