Notion Introduces its First AI Agent

During the “Make with Notion” event held on Thursday, the company unveiled its inaugural AI agent. This new functionality leverages a user’s complete collection of Notion pages and databases as contextual information.

The agent is designed for automated content generation, capable of producing meeting summaries and analyses, competitor assessments, and dedicated feedback collection pages.

Automated Task Management and Data Updates

The productivity platform detailed that the agent possesses the capability to both establish new pages and databases, and to revise existing ones with updated data, properties, and views.

Notion agents can also be initiated from external platforms integrated with the service. For example, a user could request the agent to construct a bug-tracking dashboard consolidating data from Slack, email, and Google Drive.

Expanding on Existing AI Capabilities

This newly launched Agent represents an evolution of Notion AI, a previously available feature focused on content searching and summarization.

However, the new agent is equipped to handle more intricate, multi-stage tasks, utilizing the advanced capabilities of agentic AI. Currently, the agent can execute tasks lasting up to 20 minutes, processing information across numerous pages.

Agent Profiles and Memory Retention

Users can define a “profile” for the agent, providing instructions regarding source referencing, output style, and the location for updating tasks and results.

The agent can also be instructed to “remember” crucial details as they are utilized. These retained memories are stored within the agent’s profile page, allowing for user review and modification.

Demonstrated Applications

In demonstration videos, the company showcased agents capable of providing feedback on landing pages and implementing revisions, creating restaurant trackers, generating analyses from meeting transcripts, and compiling competitive analysis reports.

Future Enhancements and Template Library

Currently, these actions require manual initiation. However, Notion announced that the functionality to create customized agents operating on a schedule or triggered by specific events will be available shortly.

A template library for agents is also planned for release, offering pre-designed prompts tailored to various tasks.

Building on a Foundation of Integrated Features

Over the past two years, Notion has introduced a calendar application, a Gmail client, a meeting note-taking tool, and an enterprise search function for consolidating information from diverse sources.

These features have provided the necessary contextual components for the development of these new automation capabilities. Other platforms, including Salesforce, Fireflies, Fathom, and Read AI, have also launched their own agents designed to extract and update information within enterprise environments.
