Nvidia Challenges Anthropic on Chip Export Controls - AI News

Nvidia Disputes Anthropic’s Position on AI Chip Export Controls
A divergence of opinion has emerged between Nvidia and Anthropic regarding proposed U.S. export controls on advanced artificial intelligence chips.
Anthropic’s Support for Export Restrictions
Anthropic recently reaffirmed its backing for the U.S. Department of Commerce’s “Framework for Artificial Intelligence Diffusion.”
This framework is slated to enact substantial restrictions on the export of AI chips beginning May 15.
Nvidia’s Counterargument
Nvidia offered a contrasting perspective the day following Anthropic’s statement.
A Nvidia spokesperson conveyed to CNBC that U.S. companies should prioritize innovation and competitive advancement, instead of alleging that sophisticated electronics are illicitly transported through unconventional means, such as concealed within personal luggage or alongside seafood shipments.
Concerns About Competitive Disadvantage
Further elaborating to TechCrunch, Nvidia asserted that “America cannot manipulate regulators to capture victory in AI.”
The company highlighted China’s substantial AI research capacity, noting that it encompasses half of the world’s AI researchers across all levels of the AI development process.
Potential Financial Impact on Nvidia
Imposing export restrictions is anticipated to negatively affect Nvidia’s worldwide revenue.
Nvidia has projected that a new licensing prerequisite for sales of its H20 AI chips in China could result in a $5.5 billion loss in revenue during the first quarter of its 2026 fiscal year.
Anthropic’s Response
An Anthropic spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the company “stands by its recently filed public submission.”
This article has been revised to incorporate further statements from both Nvidia and Anthropic.
