Octopus Energy Spins Off Kraken Billing & AI Platform

Kraken Spinoff Announced by Octopus Energy

Octopus Energy, a leading British renewable energy firm, has announced the forthcoming separation of Kraken, its technology platform designed for utility companies.

This decision is largely driven by secured annual revenue commitments exceeding $500 million from various utilities and energy suppliers.

Potential IPO and Valuation

Reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest a potential initial public offering (IPO) for Kraken could occur within the next year.

The anticipated valuation for Kraken at the time of an IPO is estimated to be around $15 billion.

Kraken’s Origins and Growth

Interestingly, Kraken was initially developed as the company’s primary offering, as stated by Octopus CEO Greg Jackson.

Octopus Energy itself was initially conceived as a demonstration client for the platform.

Currently, Kraken supports over 7.7 million households in the U.K., alongside an additional 2.8 million customers internationally.

Addressing Conflicts of Interest

The spinoff is intended to mitigate potential conflicts of interest as Kraken expands its client base to include utilities and power providers independent of Octopus Energy.

The process of separating Kraken was initiated by Octopus last year.

Octopus Energy’s Rapid Expansion

Founded in 2015, Octopus Energy has experienced remarkable growth, becoming the largest energy provider in the U.K. within a decade.

This achievement saw it surpass British Gas, a company with a history spanning over two centuries.

Innovative Strategies for Customer Acquisition

A key factor in Octopus Energy’s success has been its implementation of inventive marketing and customer acquisition techniques.

These include initiatives like Zero Bills, which offers homeowners a decade of eliminated energy costs with fully electrified properties.

The Agile Tariff and Grid Optimization

Another notable offering is the Agile tariff, which incentivizes customers to adjust their electricity consumption to periods of grid surplus.

This can even result in consumers being able to operate appliances, such as washing machines, at no cost.

Leveraging AI and Data Analysis

Data collected from these programs is analyzed using AI models integrated within Kraken.

This analysis helps determine the optimal integration of increasing amounts of renewable energy into the power grid.

Kraken’s Capabilities for Utilities

Kraken empowers utilities and energy providers to efficiently access various power sources, including renewables, solar energy, and distributed energy resources.

Distributed energy resources encompass technologies like EV chargers, smart thermostats, and residential battery storage systems.

Furthermore, it provides a comprehensive customer management system covering billing, meter reading, and customer support functions.
